Sundarakanda (2008, Telugu: సుందరాకాండ) is a Telugu movie directed by well known Telugu director, Bapu. Naresh and Charmi act in the lead roles. The story is provided by Mullapudi Ramana and music by Vidyasagar.

Synopsis

Pinky (Charmi) is the daughter of Sita (Prema), who keeps away from her husband. On Pinky's insistence, Sita reveals the past.She met Raja Ravivarma (Sunil Sharma), son of Zamindar Surendra Varma (Ranganath) on a study tour of a tribal village .They fell in love and got married then and there. His son's marriage with Sita, a commoner, gave such a shock to Surendra Varma that he lost the use of his legs.Ravivarma's mother, Bharati (Sangeetha) pleaded with Sita to leave the palace to save the family honor .After Sita left, Bhushanam(Vizag Prasad), brother-in-law of Surendra Varma,raises a hue and cry that Sita stole gold ornaments from the palace and escaped.Being so discredited even in the eyes of her love and husband she stayed away . Now the story revolves around Pinky's efforts to reunite her parents.She is a lively girl trying to make friends with her father's family. She pretends to be sent by the Party bosses to pick the candidate for minister's post.She dabbles in this political charade with the help of Naresh,a jornalist(Allari Naresh). Her father's opponent Kota (Kota Srinivasa Rao) who is also an aspiring candidate for the Chief Minister post and his mates provide the comedy and political satire. As expected she succeeds in reuniting the family and exposing the villains .Music with lyrics reminding one of the tribal idiom is a treat.The visuals with the rustic outdoor and the heavily ornate interiors of a feudal gentry, have the stamp of Bapu.

Maya (Padmini Kolhapure) tente de se suicider lors de sa nuit de noce, mais son mari, Anand (Naseeruddin Shah), un médecin veuf, parvient à la sauver. Elle lui explique alors les raisons de son geste : elle a été contrainte de l'épouser, alors qu'elle souhaitait se marier avec un chanteur de rue, Prem Pratap. Leur histoire d'amour est racontée dans un flashback : Prem (Anil Kapoor) et son assistant, le jeune Chottu, venus à Mumbai pour faire carrière dans le cinéma, louent une chambre chez les parents de Maya. Maya tombe immédiatement amoureuse du chanteur, mais celui-ci, estimant n'être pas un parti digne d'elle, repousse ses avances. Il finit cependant par accepter de l'épouser, mais les parents de Maya les en empêchent. Le Dr Anand s'engage alors à retrouver Prem et à divorcer de Maya. Il lui demande cependant de rester avec lui pour sept jours, afin que sa mère, gravement malade, puisse mourir en ayant l'illusion que son fils a trouvé une épouse. À la mort de sa mère, il réunit Maya et Prem. Celui-ci refuse cependant de briser le mariage d'Anand et de Prem, en affirmant que cela serait contraire à la culture indienne.

Raja Rao Bahadur (Kanta Rao) is the head of a wealthy and charitable landlord family who has a young son Sreedhar. At his son's request, Rao helps his college friend (Hari) with the costs of higher education abroad. Hari is grateful and invites Sreedhar to his sister Laxmi's (Sangeeta) wedding in the village. The film revolves around Krishna (played by Krishnam Raju) who brings together an unlikely group of 5 youngsters to help in creating awareness among their villagers to revolt against the cruel village head, Rambhoopal (Rao Gopal Rao) and his henchmen. Even though being a revolutionary theme, the movie was wonderfully made without the usual noise that accompanies the leftist movies and fashioned on the lines of the great epic Mahabharata. Amazing performances by all the actors (Krishnam Raju, Raogopal Rao, Allu Ramalingaiah etc.) and wonderful technical backup make this movie another classic from Bapu. The film also has Chiranjeevi as a very young actor (his second movie to be released) in the role of Parthu.
