Il est sélectionné pour représenter le Bangladesh aux Oscars du cinéma 2014 dans la catégorie meilleur film en langue étrangère.

Synopsis

Le leader d'une petite communauté locale, Amin, a banni toute forme d'image dans son village rural du Bangladesh. Il va même jusqu'à dire que l'imagination est aussi coupable qu'un objet. Mais le changement arrive et la tension entre cette vision traditionnelle et l'arrivée de la modernité entraîne des conséquences pour chacun des habitants du village.

Everyday on the way back to his suburban home on the other side of the river, struggling young graduate Mithu keeps gazing at the dazzling city of Dhaka which is like a big pie. Everybody wants to have a stake in that pie. Mithu feels he is not properly equipped to win over his stake. So he starts to equip himself in an unusual and unethical fashion. He realizes when the world can not be changed according to his wish; it is easier to create a new customized world in his head! He embarks on a journey of faking, lying, and fantasizing. He feels the immense pleasure of creativity because 'truth is what one has while lies are what one creates'. It then turns out to be a dangerously 'creative' game of sex-lies-and videotape.

Rabindranath Tagore’s elder brother Jyotirindranath Tagore, a Western educated bright young man from the 19th century Bengal met the octogenarian Lalan Fakir and drew a portrait of the poet saint in the former houseboat afloat on the Padma river. Jyotirindranath, an urban intellectual exchange views with the man of native wisdom. Their exchange of ideas forms the cinematic narrative of this film. The narrative is a saga of the life and time of Lalan Fakir and his liberal sect who lived a life of high order in an otherwise superstitious 19th century Indian society. Lalan inherited the best of the liberal and enlightened tradition of Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam to develop a philosophy of life which is extremely secular and tolerant. Thus became an easy prey for the fundamentalists from the Hindu and the Muslim institutions. They were the parallel stream flowing freely in the heart of rural Bengal when men like Tagore were germinating ideas of the Bengal Renaissance. The love and compassion of Lalan is relevant more than ever in today’s world of intolerance and hate.
