The Fall of a Nation is a 1916 American silent drama film directed by Thomas Dixon, Jr., and is a sequel to the 1915 film The Birth of a Nation, directed by D. W. Griffith. Dixon, Jr. attempted to cash in on the success of the controversial first film. The Fall of a Nation is considered to be the first ever film sequel. Based upon The Fall of a Nation, written by the director, the film is now considered lost.

Synopsis

The Fall of a Nation is an attack on the pacifism of William Jennings Bryan and Henry Ford and a plea for American preparedness for war.

As described in a film magazine, when the American civil war veterans staying at an old soldiers' home in a small town hear that young men are not volunteering for military service, they attempt to enlist but are rejected, much to the amusement of some idle young rich men. This includes Randall Lee (Dearholt), whose father Thomas Lee (Burton) owns large mining interests such as the local Top Copper mine. Davy Glidden (Pickford), a boy scout whose father Adjutant Glidden (Geldart) is in charge of the old soldiers' home, wants to serve but is too young to join the army. While on a secret investigation, Davy overhears two German spies, Carl Bender (Farley) and Frank Schmale (Hastings), planning to cripple the Lee mine and take a large amount of its product back to their native land. With the assistance of men from the old soldiers' home, the spies are rounded up and brought before the laboring men of the mine before they can do any damage and the Edwards family, who had been visiting the Lee's, are saved. Davy believes that he is in love with the Edwards' daughter Flora (MacDonald), although she is several years older than him. Randall sees the bravery of Davy and the veterans of the old soldiers' home and, ashamed of himself, enlists.

In pre-World War I Germany, Kaiser Wilhelm fathers a number of illegitimate children and sends them to various parts of the world to be reared by his loyal agents. Under the guardianship of Dr. Carl Von Strumpf, one of these children, Robert Busch, grows up believing that he is the son of wealthy German-American Richard Busch, but in reality, Strumpf and Busch are servants of the Kaiser. When the United States declares war on Germany, Robert expresses his earnest desire to enlist in the American army, much to the delight of his patriotic sister Emily. Before he can do so, however, Strumpf tells Robert the secret of his parentage, believing that the young man now will be eager to fight for Germany's cause. Robert feigns enthusiasm but secretly offers his services to the U.S. government, and with the passport provided him by the Pan-German league, he goes to Germany and kills the crown prince. Next, he shoots the Kaiser and blows up the entire palace, thus sacrificing his life for the principles of democracy.

Lorsque les États-Unis entrent en guerre, une mère envoie ses deux premiers fils aux champs de bataille, mais son cœur en est brisé. Elle apprend bientôt que l'aîné est porté manquant et que le cadet est blessé, et décide alors de garder à la maison le benjamin. Celui-ci, influencé par la littérature pacifiste, accompagne de bon cœur sa mère dans leur maison au bord de la mer, mais le père, lui, a honte de ce comportement. Alors qu'ils sont en train de se quereller à ce propos, les survivants d'un navire torpillé par un sous-marin allemand arrivent cherchant un refuge. La mère et le fils réalisent alors l'importance de la cause et le fils s'engage dans l'armée. À Noël, les trois fils rentrent à la maison, l'aîné accompagné de sa femme, une Française.
