Rudy Bronson is a senior in a small college in the Midwest. While in school, he completes a correspondence course in the saxophone, given by the nationally known Ted Grant. Bronson and his friends form a band, but have difficulty finding work. Believing that Grant will help them land professional jobs, the band heads to the Long Island, New York home of Grant. Once there, they pester Grant for an interview, to the point where Grant leaves his home, along with his manager, to stay in New York City, until Bronson gives up and goes home.

Dans Clothes-Line Alley, Terry McGowen courtise Amarilly Jenkins, une vendeuse de cigarettes. Lorsque le riche sculpteur Gordon Phillips est blessé lors d'une bagarre dans le café où elle travaille, Amarilly l'emmène chez elle, où sa mère, une blanchisseuse irlandaise, soigne ses blessures. La tante de Gordon, M Stuyvesant Phillips, espérant faire avec Amarilly une expérience sociale, emmène la jeune femme dans sa magnifique maison. M Phillips réalise avec consternation que Gordon est en train de tomber amoureux d'Amarilly. Pour illustrer la folie de cette alliance, M Phillips invite toute la famille Jenkins pour le thé, au cours duquel M Jenkins danse une gigue avec le maître d'hôtel. Amarilly et Gordon se rendent compte qu'ils ne sont pas faits l'un pour l'autre, et Amarilly retourne vers Terry et un vrai bonheur.

As described in a film publication, Minnie (Joy), the homeliest girl in town, is devoted to her father (Barnum), a discouraged inventor who has been working on a wireless device. Subject to the sneers of her neighbors, Minnie "invents" a lover and sends herself letters and flowers. Her stepsister (Lynch) suspects the truth and threatens to expose her. Desperate, she claims an unidentified body at the morgue and tells a reporter (Moore) that this is her lover, unaware that the body is that of a Chinese man. The absent-minded reporter sees he heart and forgets about the big story. After further disappointments in the invention, Minnie's stepmother decides to leave her father. Her father then has a success and becomes rich. At a celebration, the stepsister and townspeople are surprised when a new couple appear, which turn out to be the former reporter and his lovely wife Minnie.

A police officer finds a baby in a trash can, and Mrs. Lippett, the cruel matron at an orphanage where children are made to work, names her "Jerusha Abbott" (she picks "Abbott" out of a phone book and gets "Jerusha" from a tombstone). The orphan, who comes to be called Judy, does what she can to stand up for the younger children, frequently clashing with both Mrs. Lippett and the cold hearted trustees. At one point she leads a rebellion against being served prunes with every meal and at another, steals a doll from a selfish rich girl to lend to a dying orphan.
