Traveling Salesman is a 1921 American comedy film starring Fatty Arbuckle. It is based on a 1908 play, The Traveling Salesman, by James Grant Forbes. A 1916 film of the play starred Frank McIntyre who had also starred in the play. The survival status of both films is classified as unknown, which suggests that they are lost films.

Synopsis

As described in a film publication, Bob Blake (Arbuckle), a travelling salesman, is the victim of a practical joke and gets off the train before his intended destination of Grand River. Bob is drenched in the pouring rain and, when he cannot find lodging, breaks into a private house that the sheriff is going to sell for a tax delinquency. The house belongs to Beth Elliott (Clarke), a telegraph operator at Grand River Station. Bob looks her up so he can pay for his lodging and falls in love with her. Franklin Royce (Holland), also in love with Beth, is jealous of Bob and accepts a proposition from Martin Drury (Taylor) to trick Beth out of the proceeds of the tax sale. In the end, Bob saves the house and wins the girl.

Attorney Algernon Leary (Fatty Arbuckle), "pure milk" candidate for mayor, attends a party for grown-ups dressed as children. Le film comporte deux parties. À l'origine, il était présenté avec entracte. D'emblée, l'intention est annoncée : ce film a pour unique fin de décrire les horreurs de la guerre, dans l'espoir que les hommes s'épargneront à l'avenir pareille épreuve. La première partie décrit l'Amérique avant la guerre civile, à travers le destin de deux familles : les nordistes Stoneman, avec le député abolitionniste Austin Stoneman (basé sur la vie authentique de Thaddeus Stevens), ses deux fils et sa fille, Elsie, et les sudistes Cameron, une famille qui compte deux filles (Margaret et Flora) et trois fils, notamment Ben.

Gish plays Janice, a wealthy girl whose fortune has been entrusted to two trust company vice presidents (the "official fathers" of the title). As described in a film magazine, Fancy Jim Sherwood (Fairbanks), the man from Painted Post, turns to the business of hunting the bad men who infest the cattle country of Wyoming after desperate character called "30-30" Smith shoots and kills his sister. He becomes proficient in handling a six-shooter and joins the detective force that protects the cattle from rustlers. Continued loss from the Big and Little Laramie district call him hence and, in order to allay suspicion as to his real occupation, he goes in the guise of an Eastern tenderfoot who has purchased a ranch. He soon finds that Bull Madden (Campeau) is responsible for the cattle thefts and that he is also forcing his attentions on Jane Forbes (Percy), a girl school teacher from the East. Sherwood falls in love with her and naively suggests that she "needs some protection - a - a - a watch dog, for instance." Sherwood soon finds out that Madden is none other than "30-30" Smith, and renews his efforts to place the man under arrest. While attempting to steal some "V" ranch cattle, Madden are captured by Sherwood's men in a battle at a deserted cave where Madden and his gang have hidden the school teacher. There follows the usual sunset and fade out as with Sherwood and Jane ride into the west together.
