George and starring Venu Nagavally and Sobha in the lead roles. The film, considered to be the first campus film in Malayalam, was adapted from the novel of the same name by George Onakkoor. It was shot mainly from Mar Ivanios College, Trivandrum.
Ootkatal marked the debut for the great actor Thilakan who was then a strong presence in the Malayalam theatre industry.
Synopsis
The film's protagonist is Rahulan who loves three different women in different stages of his life. After his childhood love Thulasi commits suicide, Rahulan falls in love with his friend's sister Reena. She hails from an orthodox Christian family and Rahulan never has the courage to approach her father for a marriage proposal. After completing college, Rahulan gets a teacher job. He eventually falls in love with Meera, a rich student of his. Meera's family fixes her marriage with Rahulan. One night, Reena visits Rahulan in his house and at the same time Meera and her father also come and is shocked to see another woman with Rahulan. In the climax, Rahulan accepts Reena into his life. On the parallel, another romance story is also told, between Davis (Rahulan's friend and Reena's brother), and a nun.Acteurs

Anwar (Anand Michael) is a final year medical student in Bangalore and Sajna (Meera Jasmine) studies in a local professional college. They are cousins and their marriage had been fixed in childhood. Sajna's college-mate Ameer (Munna) falls in love with her. Sajna tries to explain her situation about being engaged and even insults him for being poor but in vain. Kalabha Mazha tells the friendly relationship between a Hindu and a Muslim family. Madhava Menon (Thilakan) who worked in the All India Radio always respects other religions and works for the upliftment of the society. Malavika (Devika) is the eldest daughter of Madhava Menon. She is betrothed to Unnikrishnan (Krishna). She is more than a sister to her two younger siblings, since their mother had died when they were quite young. Menon, is regretful that he hasn't been able to save much money for his children, and the family finds it hard, to make both ends meet, as days pass by. There is a Muslim family staying nearby, headed by Kunjali (Mamukkoya). His son-in-law, on a job in the Middle East, had been missing for about six long years. Malavika's sister, falls for a film director, and soon realizes that her decision was wrong. Her brother on the other hand, takes up a job at a local bank, and finds himself having transformed into a goon. Later, Malavika bumps into her sister's absconding lover, and almost meets with the same fate in his hands.

Vasanthi has to mother three generations of her family in addition to her daytime job. She finds liberation by escaping into madness and a mental asylum. Kaimal and Susheela are leading a troubled married life. The latter is unsatisfied with the ignorance from her husband. Susheela, a mother of two children, indulges in a physical relation with a car mechanic named Giri. On an unfortunate day, she elopes with Giri to start a new life. After the incident, Kaimal is harassed by many of his friends and colleagues. Balan, a friend of Kaimal, helps him to get a relief. Balan tries to bring back Susheela, who was still having an unsatisfied life with Giri, to Kaimal's life. He arranges a meeting between Susheela and Kaimal in a beach. But, they found Kaimal dead after being stabbed by himself with a knife.
