Synopsis
The daughter of an economically middle-class family fails to return home one night. Her family worries, make searches and evolves into a deep crisis, more so because she is the only bread winner in the family. Overcoming the economic and social constraints, the film has a deep underlining of hidden strength.Acteurs

Palan, un adolescent pauvre de la campagne, est "loué" comme serviteur par un jeune couple de la moyenne bourgeoisie citadine, Anjan et sa femme Mamata. In September 1980, a film crew comes to a village to make a film about a famine, which killed five million Bengalees in 1943. It was a man made famine, a side-product of the war, and the film crew will create the tragedy of those millions who died of starvation. The film documents the convivial life among the film crew and the hazards, problems and tension of film making on location. The actors live a double life, and the villagers, both simple and not-so-simple folk watch their work with wonder and suspicion. But as the film progresses, the recreated past begins to confront the present. The uneasy coexistence of 1943 and 1980 reveals bizarre connection, involving a village woman whose visions add a further dimension of time—that of future.

Set in the 1930s, the film is about a group of tribals who live in a small village in Orissa amidst wild animals like tigers and boars. Apart from the problems faced by the animals that ruin the harvest, they also suffer in the hands of the greedy moneylenders and police informers. Around this time, a newly posted British administrator arrives at the village who happens to be passionate on hunting. He befriends Ghinua, a native tribal who is also an exceptional archer. Three friends from the city visit some ruins where an aged mother (Gita Sen) and her daughter Jamini (Shabana Azmi) live. Deux hommes du peuple, l'un fermier, l'autre tisserand s'installent dans un village en ruines - vestige de quelque société précédente ? - et tentent de vivre en échangeant le produit de leur travail, contre le strict nécessaire pour vivre et pour produire par l'intermédiaire d'un marchand. Après le départ de celle-ci, un conflit éclate avec le rusé marchand que les deux hommes accusent d'exploitation éhontée. Forts de leur "bon droit", le marchand et ses acolytes rasent finalement leur communauté au bulldozer.
