Gabbar Singh is a fictional character and the antagonist in the 1975 Hindi film Sholay written by Salim-Javed, also later featured in the spoof Ramgarh Ke Sholay.

Played by Amjad Khan, he is shown in the movie Sholay as a dacoit who leads a group in looting and plundering the villages in the region of Ramgarh. He has a sadistic personality and insists on killing whenever required to continue his status and to take revenge on his enemies. The character of Gabbar is one of the most popular in Indian films.

Venkataratnam Naidu is a young boy who lives with his younger half-brother (Ajay), stepfather Naidu (Nagineedu) and mother (Suhasini Maniratnam) in Kondaveedu which is a village in Guntur District. His stepfather is always partial towards his half-brother which constantly angers Venkataratnam. He starts to not care about what other people think about him and renames himself after the fictional character "Gabbar Singh". His anger towards his brother and father grows and he runs away from home. His stepfather, Naidu catches him and joins him in a boarding school away from Kondaveedu.

Sholay signifie littéralement "Braises" en hindî. Dans une locomotive, Thakur Baldev Singh, inspecteur de police, est en train de poursuivre les deux malfrats Veeru (Dharmendra) et Jai (Amitabh Bachchan) lorsqu'il trébuche entre deux wagons et est sur le point de chuter mortellement. Cependant les deux bandits compatissent et parviennent à le tirer de cette posture.
