Un méchant est un personnage incarnant le Mal ou agissant comme tel. Il apparaît généralement dans la fiction et la littérature et s'oppose en général au protagoniste, appelé par opposition, le « gentil ». Lorsque dans une œuvre la division des personnages se fait de manière assez nette entre les « gentils » et les méchants, il s'agit d'une acception manichéenne. Un méchant particulièrement important par rapport aux autres est couramment appelé pire ennemi.Dans une œuvre non manichéenne, un héros peut ne pas être un parangon de vertu, il s'agit alors d'un anti-héros. Par exemple, le personnage principal du roman de science-fiction, Nicolas Eymerich, inquisiteur (Valerio Evangelisti, 1998), est manipulateur, violent et dénué de remords, même s'il est persuadé d'œuvrer pour le bien. Cet argument est également valable pour le méchant - il n'est réellement méchant que du point de vue du protagoniste ; ceci est particulièrement visible dans les films de guerre par exemple, où le camp ennemi n'est pas celui du personnage principal.
De la même manière qu'il existe différents types de héros (des héros intègres, des antihéros, des héros avec un caractère « méchant »...) il existe différents types de méchants dont le rôle est, entre autres, de mettre en valeur par contraste les actions du héros qui prennent leur sens dans un contexte de lutte et d'opposition. Le méchant est bien souvent le moteur scénaristique de l'action. Sans lui le héros vit une vie paisible et ordonnée, insouciante ; le méchant perturbe cet équilibre, et c'est dans ce sens qu'il est le moteur de l'action. Ceci apparaît en particulier dans les comics américains, dans lesquels les super-héros affrontent des super-méchants, souvent récurrents et qui donnent une raison d'être au super-héros.
Les comics fournissent les exemples les plus extrêmes, presque caricaturaux, de héros (Superman) et de méchants (pensons notamment au Bouffon Vert et à Magnéto qui s'opposent respectivement à Spider-Man et aux X-Men). Un autre exemple flagrant est celui des films d'horreur, où, bien souvent, les méchants peuvent davantage être considérés comme les héros que les « gentils » eux-mêmes.
La scission bien / mal équivalente à l'opposition gentil / méchant n'est pas un concept nouveau. Par contre, certaines œuvres naviguent entre les deux, comme dans le film Heat où le méchant, incarné par Robert De Niro, semble paradoxalement posséder plus de bons sentiments que le gentil, incarné par Al Pacino. Robert De Niro ne réprésente pas vraiment le méchant du film, le vrai méchant est plutôt Waingro (Kevin Gage), qui lui est un psychopathe et ne possède pas de bons sentiments paradoxaux avec les personnages de De Niro et Pacino.

As he tries to access an ATM to retrieve his last twenty bucks, Jason “JINX” Taylor runs into a snag – the transaction fee will overdraw him, and he cannot get his money out of the bank. Jinx fumes about this and other hidden charges which complicate his life…as we realize that he is locked in a bank vault…with the beautiful but tied-up Jessica, her apparently a hostage. But, as Jinx rails against corporations and how they stack the deck, we realize that the situation is very different from what it appears: in fact, it is Jessica, not Jinx, who is robbing the bank. She is aligned with Simon, who leads an armed team inside the branch. However, Jinx’s entry into the scenario upsets the heist, leading him and Jessica to be inadvertently locked inside the vault. In addition, Jinx has called the cops, who, led by Officer De Gepse, have surrounded the bank. Jinx makes contact with Simon by cell phone, and the situation becomes clearer, as he realizes Jessica has access to a special inside-the-vault computer and its codes…she and only she can open the vault door. Simon becomes increasingly upset when he is unable to strong-talk Jinx into getting the vault open (so the robbers can clear out the safe deposit boxes). And De Gepse is equally frustrated by the standoff, particularly when it is Jinx, not he, who seems to gain control over the situation.

1889, Idaho. The Hartford Transcontinental Railroad is attempting to build a railroad through "Hell's Gate Pass". However, King Carter, the self-appointed ruler of the land beyod the pass, does not want this to happen. He sends henchmen, including local Indians, to disrupt the construction anyway they can, from sabotage to kidnapping Claire Hartford, the daughter of the company President. The President's assistant, Jeff Ramsay, and his sidekicks, stop King Carter's schemes at every point and eventually defeat him entirely. This opens the area up to new settlers, the first of which is Jeff himself and his new wife Claire.

Des colons s'étant installés dans une vallée au Nouveau-Mexique sont attaqués par les Black Raiders. La vallée a été annexée par le rancher Craig Dolan, qui ne veut pas de la présence de nouveaux colons dans celle-ci. Son fils, Bart, a pris les chose en mains et a formé les Black Raiders. Stanley Stanfield is the inventor of the Vanishing Ray, a wearable device which, when active, leaves only the user's shadow still visible. After meeting with a fellow scientist, Carl Van Dorn, a prototype is built. Stanley intends to sell bonds to finance his invention. He inherited them from his late father, an editor for the Tribune newspaper, but the stockbroker he meets is corruptly involved with Wade Barnett, the businessman who hounded Stanley's father to his death. Barnett wants the bonds and will go to any length to acquire them. A conflict ensues between Stanley and Barnett. However, Stanley's new girlfriend, Gloria Grant, is really Gloria Barnett, his enemy's estranged daughter. Neither hero nor villain wants to hurt Gloria and must work around this in their struggle. Many science fiction gadgets, including a robot and The Destroying Ray, also feature.
