Art Clokey est un réalisateur américain né le 12 octobre 1921 à Détroit, Michigan et mort le 8 janvier 2010.
Art Clokey est considéré comme le pionnier de l'animation à base de pâte à modeler qu'il a expérimentée dès 1955 dans un court-métrage appelé Gumbasia, sous l'influence de son professeur Slavko Vorkapich , à l'université de Californie du Sud. Clokey fut diplômé de l'université Miami de l'Ohio où son père adoptif, Joseph W. Clokey , avait été doyen de l'école des beaux-arts.
L'esthétique de cet environnement fut à la base de celui de son plus célèbre personnage, Gumby. Depuis 1956, Gumby a toujours été présent sur les écrans d'Amérique du Nord, faisant des apparitions dans différentes séries télévisées et en 1995 dans le film Gumby: The Movie. L'autre production célèbre de Clokey est le duo Davey et Goliath, sponsorisée par l'Église luthérienne.
Une chose moins connue est qu'Art Clokey réalisa quelques films d'animation à base de pâte à modeler très expérimentaux et visuellement inventifs, qui n'avaient rien à voir avec un univers enfantin. Pas seulement son premier film Gumbasia, mais aussi le film visuellement riche Mandala — décrit par Clokey comme une métaphore de l'évolution de la conscience humaine — et le bizarre The Clay Peacock, une élaboration autour du logo de l'époque de la chaîne de télévision américaine NBC. Biographie
Clokey was born Arthur Charles Farrington in Detroit, Michigan. When he was nine years old, his parents divorced and he stayed with his father, Charles Farrington. After his father died in a car accident, he went to live with his mother in California, but his stepfather had no interest in raising another man's son, and so Arthur was sent to an orphanage. When he was 11 or 12, he was adopted by Joseph W. Clokey, a classical music composer and organist who taught music at Pomona College in Claremont, California. He schooled Arthur in painting, drawing, and film making while also taking him on journeys to Canada and Mexico. The aesthetic environment later became the home of Clokey's most famous character, Gumby, whose name derives from his childhood experiences during summer visits to his grandfather's farm, when he enjoyed playing with the clay and mud mixture called "gumbo".Le plus souvent avec

The film opens on a film set, where Gumby and his friends are filming a dinosaur movie. A ferocious Tyrannosaurus Rex named Arnie charges on set and is about to devour a young doe named Barbara when suddenly, he removes his false teeth and lets the doe go out of sympathy. Gumby cuts the scene and questions Arnie on his hesitation to act ferocious. Although Arnie knows it is all just acting, he feels unfit for the part because it just isn't him. He explains that he once was a ferocious T-Rex, but thanks to the divine influence of George Pal, he has reformed and is now a vegetarian without a bad bone in his body. Gumby fails to understand the profound effect of George Pal on Arnie's persona, so Arnie and Pokey show Gumby a set of George Pal shorts to show him the significance of the artist, thus starting The Puppetoon Movie.
