Frank Ramsey Adams (July 7, 1883 – October 8, 1963) was an American author, screenwriter, composer, and newspaper reporter. He was born on July 7, 1883 in Morrison, Illinois. Educated at the University of Chicago, Adams worked as a reporter for several Chicago newspapers, including the Chicago Tribune, City Press, Chicago Daily News, and the Chicago Herald-Examiner. From 1918 to 1932, he was manager of the Playhouse Theater and owner of the Sylvan Beach Resort Co. in Whitehall, Michigan.

Adams wrote plays, musical comedies, and lyrics for popular songs, such as "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now". He composed the stage scores for the musicals "The Time, the Place, and the Girl", "The Girl Question", "A Stubborn Cinderella", "The Goddess of Liberty", and "The Price of Tonight". His chief musical collaborators included Joe Howard, Harold Orlob and Will Hough.

Adams wrote several novels, some of which were made into films. His short stories were published in several magazines, including Smart Set, Cosmopolitan, Black Cat, and Illustrated Detective. He also had a successful career as a screenwriter in Hollywood, writing the stories for such films as Stage Struck (1925), Almost a Lady (1925), and The Cowboy and the Lady (1938), which starred Gary Cooper and Merle Oberon.

On December 1, 1931, he married Lorna D. Margrave. The couple had one child. During World War II, Adams fought in France as a lieutenant in a United States Army artillery unit. Adams died October 8, 1963 at White Lake, Michigan. He was 80 years old.

Former police detective Sam Wye is on the trail of socialite Kay Kerrigan who is accused of fatally shooting millionaire cad Thomas Bruhme. Kay has taken a ship to the South Seas followed by Sam, Sam's secretary Jean Livingstone as well as police detectives Ben "Homer" Blodgett and George Faulkner. Along the way, through various adventures, Sam and Kay fall in love, as do Homer and Jean. Sam eventually determines that the actual killer was a jealous husband whose wife was having an affair with Bruhme. Kay is thus cleared and free to marry Sam.

Rosalind Joy (Helen Foster) is an heiress who has inherited a South Seas island known as Pleasure Island. A hidden cache of gold is allegedly buried on the island, which has several haunted structures. Rosalind's uncle, Spring Gilbert (Al Ferguson), wants the gold for himself and declares he will stop at nothing, not even the death of his niece, to get it. Rosalind, meanwhile, is befriended by Jerry Fitzjames (Jack Dougherty), a playwright. Unfortunately, Jack has only recently escaped from a psychiatric hospital. Although he swears to protect Rosalind, she doubts Jerry's sanity. The two lovers race against Uncle Gilbert (who has set several traps for them) to find the treasure. In the end, Rosalind and Jerry are aided by the "Phantom Rider," a spectral horseman.

As described in a film publication summary, Carlotta Darley (Dean) is engaged to Homer Carleton (Crosby), but regrets that Homer is not as tall and handsome as the butler Peter (Kerry). Her father Christopher Darley (Tooker) was aware that Peter was a former crook but believes that he has reformed. Clare Conway (Keefe), the household maid, is in love with Peter and jealous of Carlotta's admiration of him. A reception is in progress when John Stover (Everton) arrives with a paper that will bring about the Darleys' financial ruin. Peter arranges to have John brought into the reception room, then holds up the guests to secure the paper and save his employer. John and Clare then escape together.

Set in the turn of the 20th century, the film focuses on Joseph E. Howard, an aspiring songwriter who happily sells a song to performer Lulu Madison, who later takes sole credit for the writing. He angrily confronts her, but she distracts him by seducing him in her hotel suite. Thinking that she can use Joe's talent for her career, she invites him to serve as her personal piano player on her tour. He accepts her invitation and bids farewell to Katie, the young niece of his guardian John McCullem who reluctantly says goodbye.
