Prabhu (Kamal Haasan) is brought up by Murali's (Rajinikanth) mother and is the General Manager for Murali's marketing agency at Chennai. Murali treats Prabhu not just as a friend, but as a brother and depends on him for all business decisions. Prabhu is in love with Padma (Sripriya), a college student. Padma's relative Jayanthi (Jayachitra) is a young widow who works at Murali's office. Murali, an alcoholic, with a roving eye is not aware of Prabhu's love for Padma. Padma is the only girl who rejects Murali's advances. Though Jayanthi knows about the love affair between Prabhu and Padma, Prabhu's presence stimulates her sexually. Sundaram (M. G. Ramachandran) is an innocent band musician who lives with his physically challenged sister Sita (Sharada) in a village. He needs more money for his sister's marriage and he sets off to Madras to earn. On the other hand Madras city Police department is shocked by series of diamond thefts. But Inspector Mohan (M. N. Nambiar) suspects the thief to be Ranjith Kumar (M. G. Ramachandran) who is actually a wealthy diamond businessman on the accounts that whenever a theft occurs he is present there. But he has no evidence and searches for that. He creates a plan with Leela (Manjula) to attract Ranjith to know his secret plans. Sundaram arrives the city and goes to an party hall. Ranjith who arrives the party surprised to see Sunadaram as he looks identical as him. He immediately plots for a plan. He takes Sundaram to his place and reveals himself. He convinces Sundaram to act like Ranjith in front of the society as he is a heart patient and require a treatment. Until his return from treatment Sundaram has to make believe everybody that he is Ranjith. Actually he makes him as Ranjith so that he can continue with his diamond smuggling meanwhile there will not be any evidence as Sundaram is going to be Ranjith everywhere. Ratnapuri is a small kingdom besieged by manifold troubles. The King’s only daughter Ratna (B. Saroja Devi) is kidnapped and the King dies without naming any successors. Marthandan (MGR), a member of the royal family is chosen by the majority of the imperial council, including the ministers and the commander-in-chief, to be the new ruler. However, the Rajaguru (P. S. Veerappa) has a different idea. Unknown to anyone, he has the princess Ratna in his custody in an island. Ratna has grown up completely unaware of her ancestry. Meanwhile, the Rajaguru plans to do get rid of Marthandan and put up his stooge Pingalan (M. N. Nambiar) as the King. He then plans to marry Ratna himself, get rid of Pingalan, and declare himself the ruler. Meanwhile, Veerabagu (K. R. Ramsingh), the loyal bodyguard of the erstwhile King, and his gang of committed people, including his son Bhoopathi and daughter Madana (P. Bhanumathi) are furious at an outsider ascending the throne. Elsewhere in the kingdom, people are far from happy. Shortage of food and unemployment are rampant all around.
