K. Subrahmanyam Sethumadhavan (en malayalam : കെ. സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യം സേതുമാധവൻ ; en tamoul : சே. சுப்பிரமணியம் சேது மாதவன்), né le 29 mai 1931 à Palakkad, est un réalisateur et scénariste indien de cinéma en langue malayalam. Depuis le début des années 1960, il a réalisé plus de 60 films, dont Odeyil Ninnu, Yakshi, Kadalpalam, Achanum Bappayum, Ara Nazhika Neram, Panitheeratha Veedu, Anubhavangal Palichakal et Punarjanmam. Il a également réalisé des films en hindi, en oriya, en tamoul, en kannada ainsi qu'en télougou et a notamment remporté dix National Film Awards et neuf Prix de cinéma de l'État du Kerala , dont quatre dans la catégorie de la meilleure réalisation.

Biographie

Sethumadhavan, fils de Subrahmanyam et de Lakshmi, naît le 29 mai 1931 dans la ville de Palakkad, dans l'État du Kerala. Ayant trois sœurs et un frère, il passe son enfance à Palakkad et dans le district de North Arcot , au Tamil Nadu ; il perd son père à l'âge de huit ans. Après des études à l'université de Madras, il ressort diplômé de biologie du Government Victoria College de Palakkad, puis il devient apprenti auprès de M. G. Ramachandran au Studio central de Coimbatore. Il débute réellement sa carrière cinématographique comme assistant réalisateur auprès de K. Ramnath, puis de L. V. Prasad, A. S. A. Swamy, Sunder Rao et Nandakarni.

En 1960, Sethumadhavan réalise Veeravijaya, son premier film en langue cingalaise. Son premier film en malayalam, intitulé Jnanasundari et produit par T. E. Vasudevan au nom d'Associates Pictures, est réalisé d'après la nouvelle de Muttathu Varkey . Sethumadhavan poursuit sa carrière et réalise plus de 60 films, dont Odayil Ninnu, Daaham, Sthanarthi Saramma, Koottukudumbam, Vazhve Mayam, Ara Nazhika Neram, Anubhavangal Palichakal, Karakanakkadal, Achanum Bappayum, Punarjanmam, Chattakkari, Oppol and Marupakkam. Son seul film en oriya est intitulé Manini.

En 1973, son film Achanum Bappayum remporte un Prix Nargus Dutt , une des récompenses nationales du cinéma indien. Le film Marupakkam remporte un National Film Award du meilleur long-métrage en 1991, devenant ainsi le premier film en tamoul à recevoir ce prix, suivi par Kanchivaram de Priyadarshan en 2007.

En 1996, le film Stri de Sethumadhavan décroche le National Film Award du meilleur long-métrage en télougou. Sethumadhavan remporte au total quatre Prix de cinéma de l'État du Kerala du meilleur réalisateur, pour les films Ara Nazhika Neram en 1970, Karakanakkadal en 1971, Pani Theeratha Veedu en 1972 et Oppol en 1980. En 1975 puis en 1980, il est membre du jury des National Film Awards, puis il est président du jury du Prix de cinéma de l'État du Kerala ; il préside le jury des National Film Awards en 2002 et reçoit le Prix J. C. Daniel de l'année 2009 en récompense à sa contribution au cinéma en malayalam. En 2011, il se voit décerner un Prix Chalachitra Ratnam par l'Association des critiques de cinéma du Kerala .


Vie privée
Sethumadhavan est marié à Valsala et a trois enfants, nommés Sonukumar, Uma et Santhosh.

Anirudhan who belongs to a middleclass family is a sales manager of a private firm. His family comprises his father, grandmother and a sister; a typical shy village girl. One day as part of Anirudhcan’s job matters he moves to a lodge in town. There he meets a group of people that includes bachelors who work like him in small firms, a middle-aged helper and the owner of the lodge. Soon Anirudhan befriends everybody and comes to know about a special character named Sukumaran who also stays there. Sukumaran is a city-bred person yet he easily makes friends with Anirudhan. Two of them had a very short accidental acquaintance earlier which makes them easier to be friends. One day a young girl comes to the place and asks to meet Sukumaran. Anirudhan and one of his friends assume that she might be the girlfriend of Sukumaran. Later they make fun of Sukumaran and thinks that he hides something from them. Some days later the same girl arrives there again. From the appearance of Anirudhan the girl mistakes him for a servant. To their surprise Sukumaran announces that she is her only sister not any girlfriend the way they think. They go with their daily routines when a telegraph arrives with the news that Anirudhan’s grandmother is ill. Anirudhan decides to leave for home at the earliest. Sukumaran also joins him. At home he finds his grandmother got injured from a small fall but nothing to worry. He introduces his friend Sukumaran to the family. Sukumaran behaves easily like one of their family members. Anirudhan’s sister Sujatha gradually likes his character and she is drawn to him. After Sukumaran’s return from Anirudhan’s home he tells he is in love with Sujatha to their roommate Ravi. Ravi arranges a meeting with Anirudhan and it becomes a marriage proposal. Anirudhan, finding no problem with the alliance agrees to the same and his sister Sujatha also. In between this Sukumaran comes with a proposal of his sister for Anirudhan. Marriages of the two friends with their sisters take place soon. In the initial time after marriage Anirudhan experiences small amounts of classism & cultural shock from Neelima in terms of usage of contraceptive pills and her discomfort to be in a typical village house. His sister Sujatha also experiences similar experiences from Sukumaran from his urban model lifestyle. To Sukumaran and Neelima the new environment and their partners’ styles are not that challenging, at least for the time being.

The film revolves around Malu (Menaka), her younger brother Appu (Aravind) and Malu's husband Govindan (Balan K. Nair). Malu and 6-year old Appu were living together. When Malu is married to Govindan, an ex-military officer, she takes Appu with her to Govindan's house. Govindan is a bit annoyed, but adjusts to the situation to win over his wife, who is much younger to him. Appu on the other hand becomes jealous of Govindan and worries he will isolate him from his dear sister. He attacks Govindan during honeymoon and Malu scolds him. The boy runs away from the house and Malu becomes distressed. Towards the end it is revealed that Appu is actually the son of Malu. When Govindan discovers the truth, he tirelessly searches for the boy and brings him back.

Anand Narayan comes from a poor family, which consists of his wife, Gayetri, daughter, Kamla, and two sons Madhu and Govind. Through hard work, Anand starts on his way to success. He meets with Nekiram, who becomes his business partner, and also his samdhi (in-law) as his daughter is in love with Madhu. Both get married in a simple ceremony. After this marriage, both Nekiram, and Anand and his family work hard at preparing food in a small sweet shop. Lord Krishna then appears to Anand who asks the Lord for material success, After this meeting Anands Dhaba grows into a restaurant, then a larger fancier restaurant, finally a five star hotel. Now Anand and his family are all wealthy and live in a palatial home. Bhagwan Shri Krishna regularly visits him and asks about him and his family. Anand proudly takes all the credit, and asks Krishna to accompany him to see his success and his hotel. Bhagwan Krishna declines, but agrees do so later. Things don't go quite as well for Anand, when he finds out that lakiram has been cheating him. lakiram leaves the house, but Madhu accompanies him. Then Anand finds that Govind has been squandering money and time on women and alcohol; and to top his disappointment Kamla gets pregnant. When Bhagwan Krishna comes to visit Anand again, he admits that he is a failure, his health is poor, and his family are all strangers to him. Lord Krishna advises Anand that this is his life and he must learn from the Mahabharata, and that every life is a struggle, which is confused by relations and near and dear ones, and also by one's ego. Once the ego is removed, then only one can see clearly.
