Shobana (born Shobana Chandrakumar Pillai) is Indian film actress and Bharata Natyam dancer from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. She has acted in more than 200 films in several languages including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada and English.
Shobana was a lead actress in a number of southern Indian films during the 1980s and 1990s. She has worked with directors such as Adoor Gopalakrishnan, G. Aravindan, K. Balachander, AM Fazil, Mani Ratnam, Bharathan and Priyadarsan. She won the National Film Award for Best Actress twice, for her performances in the films Manichitrathazhu (1993) and Mitr, My Friend (2001). Consequent to the 1993 National Award, Shobana turned extremely selective about her films.
Shobana was trained under the Bharata Natyam dancers, Chitra Visweswaran and Padma Subrahmanyam. She emerged as an independent performer and choreographer in her twenties and currently runs a dance school, Kalarpana, in Chennai.
In 2006, the Indian Government honoured Shobana with the Padma Shri for her contributions towards the classical dance.
In 2014, The Kerala Government honoured her with the Kala Ratna Award
She is the niece of the Travancore sisters – Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini, all of whom were classical Indian dancers and actresses. The actress Sukumari is her paternal aunt. Malayalam actress Ambika Sukumaran is her relative. Malayalam actors Vineeth is her cousin and Krishna is her nephew.

In California, the Republican party governor candidate John Kory (Sean James Sutton) is striving to raise his dismal ratings. Sunny Kurishingal (Vijay Babu), the chief campaign officer of John Kory, is failing with his campaign strategies and runs out of ideas to ensure Kory's victory. Sunny is forced to consult a third person's advise and calls Francis Kunjappan (Mukesh), a PWD minister and his native friend in Kerala, for hiring any good political consultant for devising campaign strategies. Kunjappan, initially reluctant, later recommends his friend and political competitor Jagannathan (Mohanlal), thus also hoping to get rid of him as he is a political threat to his ministerial position. Jagannathan, a young politician and a sports enthusiastic, is illiterate in English but has an inborn talent to solve the gravest of issues in the most prudent manner. Even Francis had consulted him for solving his toughest problems. But Francis thinks that Jaganathan’s unorthodox ideas will fail miserably in the US. Kunjappan meets Jagannathan and offers him the job and a remuneration of ₹30 crores which is sufficient to raise Jagannathan's dream project, a sports academy in Kerala. Jagannathan takes up the assignment and flies to the US, together with his assistants Pottakuzhi Jabbar (Baburaj) and Vayalar Varkey (Aju Varghese).

The story is set in Karnataka and Goa. A young journalist Bharathi (Genelia D'Souza), along with two of her friends, investigate a series of terrorist attacks which have taken place in Chennai and also illegal activities like women trafficking. When they are caught video-recording illicit activities happening in a secluded house one night by a group of thugs, they attempt to flee from them. While Bharathi's friends are killed, Bharathi manages to escape despite being stabbed by one of the thugs. But after the attack on Bharathi and her friends, the thugs' vehicle explodes due to a small mishap when a matchstick falls over petrol packets stored in the vehicle, killing all the thugs. Bharathi comes up with a new idea to eradicate society's evils by creating and propagating a fictional character called "Velayudham" who wants to clean up the city of terrorism and other illegal activities.

Sagar Alias Jacky (Mohanlal) is a gangster who is known for solving problems among big gangs. The Chief Minister's(Nedumudi Venu) son-in-law, Manu(Manoj K Jayan) is kidnapped and the police are unable to find a clue. Manu's wife Indu(Shobhana) realises that the police have been influenced by her brother Hari(Ganesh) who seems to know the kidnappers. Indu decides to call her best friend Sagar to help find her husband. Sagar calls his best henchmen from all over Kerala for the job. The gang then travels to Goa where Sagar's contact tells him that the kidnappers are the Rosario brothers(Sampath Raj,Sherveer Vakil) who run the most powerful gang in the Goa underworld. After considerable difficulties, Sagar and his gang locate the night club where Manu is held hostage and helps him to escape. This audacity does not sit well with the Rosarios who swear vengeance against Sagar. They kidnap one of Sagar's favourite gangsters and demand ransom. Sagar responds by kidnapping two of the three Rosario brothers and demands that his man be released at once. Realising that they would never be able to defeat Sagar in a heads-on battle, the Rosario brothers make a deal with Manu and Hari to deliver Sagar's current location. The Rosarios then try to assassinate Sagar but fail. Frustrated with repeated defeats, the Rosarios then approach Sagar's rival, Nanthakrishna Naina(Suman). Naina supplies them with a sniper, Sheikh Imran(Rahul Dev), who is also an internationally infamous assassin. Imran is asked to assassinate Manu so that the Sagar can be framed for the murder. But the Rosarios' plan backfires as Indu gives witness that Sagar was not responsible for her husband's murder.

Following his father's death, Puramanayil Chandran (Mohanlal) was forced leave for Abu Dhabi to amortise all his father's debts. The film commences with his mother, Lakshmi (Kaviyoor Ponnamma), faking an illness to persuade Chandran to come back to India to get him married. Chandran takes care of his big family including his mother and younger brothers. During his vacation in India, Chandran has an excellent time with his family. However, Chandran's marriage doesn't take place because a suitable bride couldn't be found. Depressed by this, Chandran decides to go back to Abu Dhabi.
