Narayanamurthy, starring Prabhudeva, Kausalya and newcomer Gayatri Jayaraman in lead roles and also stars both the comedians Vivek and Vadivelu, being their most recent collaboration in Tamil films. The film, which has music scored by Yuvan Shankar Raja, released on 14 November 2001 and met with average results the box office. However, the film was nonetheless dubbed into Telugu and released as Manasuna Manasai in 2005. The film successfully ran for 100 days. The director R. D. Narayanamurthy and Prabhudeva celebrated the success in a grand manner.

Kuppan (Livingston), after losing his mother, comes from the village to live with the family of his uncle Mannangatti (Manivannan) in the city. Mannangatti works abroad for his family. Mannangatti has three daughters : Lakshmi (Kausalya), a soft-spoken girl, and arrogant city girls Pooja (Kasthuri) and Teja (Vineetha), and a son Vellaiyan (Vadivelu) who wants to get married as fast as possible. When Mannangatti comes back from abroad, he decides to arrange his children's marriage. Pooja gets married with the rich NRI Santhosh (Vivek) and Teja gets married with Ramesh (Karan), a government employee, who wants to make it big in life. Vellaiyan falls in love with Jennifer (Kovai Sarala) and marries her. While Lakshmi refuses to marry the person her father has chosen and marries her cousin Kuppan secretly. What transpires later forms the crux of the story.

Pugazh (Vijay) is an IITian and Oxford alumnus with a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering. With the help of his friend, Inspector Joseph (Manoj K. Jayan), he succeeds in tracking down a wanted criminal Raaka (Adithya), and kills him. The scene then shifts to a village, where Pugazh is attending the wedding of a Tahsildar's daughter. Thirumalai (Vijay) mechanic who lives in Pudupet and has three close friends for whom he would do anything. Romeo lives a privileged life as a celebrity with his widowed mother, in Bangalore, India. He receives considerable assistance and encouragement from Raj Mohan to dance and sing. He meets and is attracted to Madhoo, who is also his fan. His mother meets with Madhoo's grandfather and both arrange their wedding. Then Romeo finds out that Raj Mohan has been stealing body organs, especially kidneys, from patients in the Satya Moorthy Hospital, and then getting them killed via bus accidents. He meets with Raj and warns him that he is going to expose him publicly. Before he could reveal their actibities Romeo is shot, taken and thrown off of a cliff. His friend, Prakash, takes the blame; he is arrested, tried in Court, found guilty, and sentenced to life imprisonment.

The film opens with a flashback showing the family feud between families of Prabhakaran (Vijayakanth) and Bhavani (Indraja). Prabhakaran and Bhavani are in love. The murder of Bhavani's father, is wrongly accused on SP's father. He starts to help Bhavani's family and mortgages his own house to finance her factory with the intention of making it up to them as he still believes that it's his father who killed Bhavani's father. But Bhavani is now trying to take revenge for her father's murder. SP's mother is now on her deathbed. While in the hospital, his mom tells how his father had a different wife and he should ask them forgiveness. He storms into Bhavani's house and accuses her uncle (who really killed Bhavni's dad), also trying to make her understand the truth but she doesn't believe him. Then Prabhakaran says he doesn't love her any more and vows that he will never trust a woman by remaining a chronic bachelor forever.
