Synopsis
A rich man meets a poor woman, A`isha, who sells lottery tickets in the streets. He is shocked at how her appearance resembles that of his recently deceased daughter. The rich man offers to pay her father a monthly fee to adopt her. The father accepts, and after finding out how attached the rich man is to A'isha, the father tries to blackmail him for more money. Azizah, a poor peasant, portrays worker oppression in this somber social drama. She gets savagely raped by a guard when she goes into the fields to gather potatoes. Faten Hamama plays Sawsan, a middle-class orphan who meets Adel (Omar Sharif), a rich man, at an auction hall. He tries to approach her but she refuses him. As a result, he eventually marries her. His playboy friends, Shafeek and Malak (among others), feel uncomfortable with Sawsan being around, as she condemns the style of life that they lead, and therefore Adel orders her to stay at home. Dans le sud de l'Égypte, un riche propriétaire terrien (le Pacha) vit dans une immense demeure avec son neveu. Le fis de son contremaître, devenu agronome, travaille avec les paysans dont les terres voisinent celles du Pacha, à améliorer la qualité de leurs cannes à sucre. Le film commence avec l'annonce du succès obtenu par les paysans, dont la récolte obtient un meilleur classement que celle des terres du Pacha (avec l'avantage d'un meilleur prix de vente). Le Pacha, poussé par son neveu, lui fait ouvrir les vannes du barrage et inonde les terres des paysans, ruinant ainsi leur récolte. Le retour de la fille du Pacha (Faten Hamama), qui étudiait en Europe depuis 8 ans, ravive son idylle avec l'agronome (Omar Charif). La recherche du coupable, les traditions de vengeance, la lutte de classes et les manigances du neveu du Pacha, entraînent des drames dans cette communauté.

Hemaidah (shokry sarhan) is a farmer who hates country life. He hates working in fields and taking care of the animals in his farm. Though unsatisfied with her, he marries Zebeidah (Faten Hamama), a woman in the same village. He is determined to leave the village, move and live in the city. He plans for his travel and asks his brother to look after his farm and family. In Cairo, Hemaidah falls in the hands of a gang, headed by a ruthless gangster. Not wishing to risk his life, he is forced to work with the gang and help them in their crimes. He is introduced to theft and harlotry, and one day the police arrest the gang. Hemaidah spends his time in prison and returns to his village after his release, regretting that he had left it.
