Anbu Thangai is a Tamil language film directed by SP. Muthuraman, starring Muthuraman and Jayalalitha in the lead roles. It has Jaya as Muthuraman's sister and Jayalalitha as his love interest. Srikanth played an important role as Muthuraman's friend. Kamal Haasan plays a guest role in the film as Buddha in a dance sequence with Jayalalitha.

Madan (Kamal Haasan) is a dancer by profession who is a dream boy of all young girls. Kalpana (Shobana),a young woman, is irritated by Madan's fame and she badly criticizes his performances which attracts attention of Madan on her. He challenges that he would make her long for him and his love, but he falls in love with her. He tries to win her love in several ways but eventually fails. One night he gets into her house with a face mask which makes Kalpana to misunderstand that he is a thief and screams and alerts her home. Madan is trapped and handed over to the police. Madan, who is a son of pickle businessman Ooruga Ulaganathan (V. K. Ramaswamy) rescues him from Police custody and finds the reason for incident to be his love for Kalpana. Kalpana's father, who is a psychiatrist, finds that Madan is the son of his old friend Ulaganathan. Madan-Kalpana's marriage is approved and fixed then.

Anand (Kamal Haasan) is a spoilt young man whose parents have died leaving behind a huge inheritance. He spends all his waking hours boozing and gambling with his buddies. One such night, he ends up in a brawl with some rowdies, but a stranger Selvam (Radharavi) comes to his rescue. Selvam beats up the rowdies and takes Anand back to his bungalow. The movie name, meaning a square inside a circle, symbolizes the situation of the character Anu's (Latha) life. Anu falls in love with Karthik (Sreekanth), the brother of her best friend Malathy (Sumithra) from childhood. Kartik doesn't like her, since she was born out of wedlock. Malathy has always done well in school and wishes to continue studying further. Kartik and Malathy's mother tries to get her married. Anu suggests that she could take her along to Chennai, where she could continue studying while Anu pursues a dancing career. Anu has to compromise and get along with her hotel managers to get a dancing contract to earn money to educate Malathy. Meanwhile, Malathy’s fiancée doesn't approve of her friendship with a club dancer, and asks Malathy to cut Anu out of her life. Though Malathy doesn't approve of her friend's way of earning a living, she cannot throw away 15 years of friendship. Malathy decides to cancel the marriage proposal in order to save her friendship. Anu goes to extreme measures to save her friend's love life.
