Viswanathan (T. S. Balaiah) is an arrogant, money-minded estate owner who lives in a bungalow called Chinnamalai Estate near Pollachi. His son Chellappa (Nagesh) is an aspiring filmmaker; Chellappa is the antithesis of his father and voices his displeasure at his father's arrogance. Viswanathan also has two daughters; Kanchana (Kanchana) and Nirmala (Rajasree). Kanchana is in love with her college mate Vasu (R. Muthuraman), the son of a rich Chennai-based businessman Sachidanandam (V. S. Raghavan). The sisters return home after completing their education in Chennai. One day while out sightseeing, a battered car driven by their father's young, rebellious estate manager Ashok (Ravichandran) bumps into their car. The sisters quarrel with Ashok and are annoyed by his insolence. At their home, they force Viswanathan to dismiss Ashok. Infuriated, Ashok pitches a tent overlooking their bungalow and begins a strike to get his job back. Nirmala accidentally drops a bucket of water on Ashok's head, hurting him. Feeling guilty, she visits Ashok's tent to apologise and they fall in love.

A middle-class joint family is living happily run by the responsible father Ethiraj, a retired headmaster. He has three sons – Maheshwaran, Raman, and Krishnan. Maheswaran is a Hindi professor, married to Parvathi and they have 5 children. Raman, a clerk in high-court is married to Sita and they have two children. Krishnan, a medical representative is married to Rukmani. Apart from them, Sumathi, the younger sister of Sita also stays in the same house, as she is pursuing higher studies in the same city. Though it’s a joint family, the father has set up his three sons in three different portions in the same house, and takes turns to eat in each of his son’s house, to avoid any possibility of problems between them. The sons give their salaries to their father, and all the financial matters are dealt by him efficiently. He is respected and feared by everyone in the family. Wrong-doers in the house-hold are made to stand on a bench by him as punishment.

Chandrasekaran, an industrialist, is very successful in his business and has a loving family. His three sons and two daughters live happily as one family. He brings up an orphan, Rangan (Sivaji Ganesan), who is utterly devoted to the family. Calamity strikes the family in the form of loss in business. The last daughter's marriage gets cancelled. The brothers and their wives ill-treat their parents and Rangan and his wife. Seeing this Chandrasekaran has no choice to ask Rangan and his wife leave their house. Aftermath Chandrasekaran dies a broken-hearted man leaving his wife and youngest daughter to be in their children's merciless hospitality. Rangan, with his simplicity and pure-hardheartedness, takes it upon himself to look after the mother and sister. In the end, he proves that love and affection is the greatest wealth.

Ramesh (Rajinikanth) starts managing the office of an industrialist who strongly suspects his relatives to be looting him. Ramesh finds the culprit and keeps a tight leash on everything happening in the office, thereby earning the wrath of the industrialist's relatives. Ramesh and Sridevi (the industrialist's daughter) initially find themselves at loggerheads, but eventually fall in love with each other. Mohan (Muthuraman) is the eldest son in a middle-class family, having superior complex that he should be first in every thing. He and Radha (Jayalalitha) fall in love. They get married. Mohan works in a low wage job which is insufficient for the family. So, Radha decides to join as sales officer and start working in a company. Her hard work earns her good name and promotion in job. So, her respect in family rises as it improves the economic status of the family and she is able to fulfill the needs and wants of the family. Mohan is intolerable seeing Radha's respect growing, he starts hating her. Then, Radha decides on Mohan's sister Suseela's wedding. Mohan decides to earn a lot of money by hook or by crook to take revenge on Radha. He earns money by modelling and then makes Radha step out of their home. Suseela's marriage is about to stop. Whether Radha succeeded in conducting her marriage or not reveals the crux of the story.
