Batasari is a 1961 Telugu Drama film directed and produced by P. S. Ramakrishna Rao and P. Bhanumathi under Bharani Pictures. The film is starring A. Nageswara Rao and P. Bhanumathi in lead roles. It was simultaneously made in Tamil language entitled Kaanal Neer.

It is based on the novel Bada Didi written by Saratchandra Chatterjee. The lyrics, dialogues and screenplay are written by Samudrala Raghavacharya.

Synopsis

Surendranath (ANR) is the son of Zamindar (Ramanna Pantulu) who wanted to go abroad for higher studies. His parents do not agree, hence he decides to leave the house. He reaches Madras in search of a job and gets a place in the house of a traditional family as a teacher. The daughter of that house is Madhavi (Bhanumathi). She takes care of every need of the family. Surendranath's behaviour surprises her and she starts to like him. Surendranath tried to talk to her personally. As a result of some misunderstanding, she openly expresses her dislike. Unable to bear the insult, he leaves the house and meets with an accident. Her elder brother (Ramana Murthy) gets married. Surendranath goes back to his Zamindari. His father dies making him the Zamindar. He marries Janaki. Diwan (Lingamurthy) mismanages the finances. As a result, Madhavi loses some property. She wanted to meet Surendranath, but Diwan refuses permission to meet him. She comes to know that he built a village Madhavipuram on her name and felt happy. While verifying the records, Surendranath finds out the mistake happened. He wanted to meet Madhavi to request her pardon, in spite of his illness and finally dies in her hands.

Gundamma (Suryakantam) is a rich widow who has a daughter Saroja (Jamuna Ramanarao), and son Prabhakar (Haranath) and a step daughter Lakshmi (Savitri). Both the girls are beautiful and intelligent. Saroja is a teen spoiled by her mother's pampering whereas Lakshmi is treated as a servant in her own house. Ramabhadraiah (S. V. Ranga Rao), who has two sons of marriageable age, is searching for suitable brides. Gundamma is interested in pursuing an alliance with Ramabhadraiah’s family for her daughter Saroja and sends a word through a middle man. It happens that he used to be a good friend of Gundamma's late husband. She wants to overcome the obstacle of her elder step daughter by getting her married to a down-and-out guy so she doesn’t have to get jeered for neglecting her step daughter. Kanchu Gantaiah (Ramana Reddy), Gundamma's manager and a cousin somehow wants Saroja to marry his son Bhupati (Rajanala) who happens to be a delinquent and is in a prison.

The story is set in a kingdom. The chief minister wants his daughter to marry the King's only son, the future prince. The King refused the idea, and the angry minister captures and arrests the King and runs the Kingdom. A loyal countryman Veeranna (Nagabhushanam) takes the Prince and leaves him in the forest away from the evil minister's hands, but gets captured himself. The Prince, grows up as the forest chief's adopted son Kannayya (N.T. Rama Rao). Veeranna's daughter is Nana (Anjali Devi). Both of them grows up as thieves. The old King escapes finally and stays at Nana's house. Nana steals the Princess Lalita Devi's (Devika) necklace and Kannayya returns it to her. The princess falls in love with him. Nana also falls for the Kannayya too. He gets to know his true identity, defeats his enemies and gets back his Kingdom.
