Blondie Plays Cupid (1940) is a comedy movie starring Penny Singleton and Arthur Lake and directed by Frank R. Strayer. Also in the cast is Glenn Ford.

Synopsis

Dagwood Bumstead has been caught possessing illegal fireworks and now he tries to make up for this by taking his wife Blondie to Aunt Hannah's ranch for 4 July celebrations. The ranch is a peaceful place in the country, but trouble starts already on the way over there, when the Bumsteads board the wrong train and have to hitchhike most of the way. The young couple that picks them up, Millie and Charlie, are on their way to get married and elope together, without their parents' consents. The Bumsteads have to accompany the young couple to court and the wedding ceremony, but the wedding is interrupted by Millie's father, Mr Tucker, storming in with a shotgun. Mr Tucker then takes the car, with Dagwood, his son and their dog still in it, and drives off. Charlie is forced to take Blondie to Aunt Hannah's ranch, and in she encourages him to have another go at marrying Millie and elop. unfortunately he twists his ankle on the way, and a very reluctant Dagwood has to take his place and go and fetch Millie from her (and her father's) home. Dagwood accidentally climbs through the window to Millie's father's bedroom, and is held at gunpoint. He flees head over heels and is chased around the property. His son discovers what he thinks is some kind of fireworks and lights it, but it is in fact a dynamite stick. When the dynamite explodes it rips up a hole in the ground, and in doing so, opens up an oil well. Millie's father is so happy over the new source of income that he consents to Charlie marrying his daughter after all, and the Bumsteads finish their weekend holiday at the hospital, in peace and quiet.

Dagwood Bumstead is forced to receive a college diploma in order to remain a worker at the Dithers Construction Company. Blondie proves to be a real nuisance to her husband Dagwood and causes domestic disturbance in the Bumstead home, when she insists on getting a maid. Dagwood is forced to take the request seriously, and asks his boss, J.C. Dithers, for a raise. As a rule, Dithers refuses the raise, but instead he offers Dagwood and his family a two-week stay at a country house, complete with servants. The house is the size of a palace, formerly owned by Batterson, a newly deceased magician. With the consent of his wife, Dagwood accepts the offer, and they prepare for take off to the country.

Blondie Bumstead is having trouble balancing the family budget, particularly as she wants to buy a new fur coat. L’entreprise de M. Espaciton connait de graves soucis depuis qu’elle s’est lancée dans l’exploitation de minage d’un astéroïde. En effet, elle est victime de sabotages d’une nature inconnue. Tous les responsables du projet ayant démissionné, M. Espacition se résout – non sans mal – à confier les rênes à Georges Jetson. Ce dernier apprend donc aux membres de sa famille qu’ils vont devoir déménager dans l'espace dès le lendemain pour s'installer près de l'usine ce qui leur déplait à tous. En effet, Julie avait rendez-vous avec son idole, Eloi devait jouer un match très important et Jeanne avait prévu des activités caritatives. Finalement, tout le monde arrive par s’habituer à sa nouvelle vie, notamment Julie qui rencontre un garçon appelé Apollo Blue. En revanche, Georges est confronté au même problème de sabotage que ses prédécesseurs. Les saboteurs opérant toujours de nuit, Georges décide de dormir dans l’usine mais évidemment il finit par s’endormir en les attendant ! C’est ainsi qu’il se fait kidnapper pendant son sommeil. Plus tard, c'est au tour de Eloi de disparaître.
