Helen, a divorced, attractive twenty-something Los Angeles office worker, has just broken up with her possessive boyfriend Paul. Living beyond her means, Helen soon loses her car and her apartment, and has to move in with her friend Donald, an aspiring screenwriter. Helen helps Donald with his screenplay, while secretly writing her own. Donald introduces Helen to Max, a producer who takes an interest in her and her screenplay. Feeling cornered by Paul, Max and Donald, who also wants a relationship with her, Helen has a series of casual affairs. These flings and her past relationships end up in her screenplay, which she is successful in selling. The story ends as Helen, now a published screenwriter, moves out of Donald's house, and drives away with her futon in tow.

1866. Josephine, séduite par le photographe de famille, porte, désormais, un enfant illégitime. Toutefois, elle assiste à des scènes dans lesquelles Percy fait étalage d'un profond mépris à l'égard des femmes. Ne se sentant plus en sécurité, Jo - c'est ainsi qu'elle se nomme maintenant - finit par devenir éleveur de moutons pour le compte du fermier Frank Badger. Après avoir dûment économisé, Jo se sépare de son employeur et achète sa propre ferme. Bientôt, elle embauche un jeune Chinois, accusé de "prendre le travail des autres" et menacé de lynchage.

Travis, a lonely and rather foolish young man, has just lost an abusive father who left all of his money to a TV preacher but left him his valuable coin collection and his large farm when, Kelly Ann, walks into his life. A talented young Jamie Harris is a struggling actress who is trying to win a role in an upcoming film called "Playmaker". Eager to gain advantage on the competition, Harris' friend Eddie says that he can arrange an introduction with Ross Talbert, an acting teacher with a reputation for grooming top talent. Talbert agrees to tutor Harris for $5,000; she scrapes up the money, only to discover that his lessons are mainly exercises in psychological abuse. Harris learns that a number of Talbert's students who didn't respond to his techniques have turned up dead, and she spies an "F" next to her name in his grade book shortly before he attacks her with a knife; she grabs a gun and kills him. The police determine that Jamie acted in self-defense - but the man who she's been taking lessons with wasn't the real Ross Talbert. As the police arrive at the scene a different corpse is lying dead on the ground, which seems to be the real teacher. As a result, she tries to find the false teacher, and discovers that he was just an actor like herself, named Michael Condren, and that she is just a puppet on a string in a perverse and bizarre story.

After many years Pooch returns to his old New York neighborhood and teams up with his old high school friend Big Boy to run the local rackets. Big Boy realizes that Pooch is a valuable and trustworthy asset in his plans of becoming local crime lord, and the two get involved with the local drug trade of the neighborhood. With the help of their pal Juanito, the pair continue to get close to having total control and will be able to make a proposition to the mob behind it all. However Big Boy doesn't know that Pooch is a cop being charged for corruption, who was given one last chance to avoid jail by going undercover to clean up his old neighborhood.
