Chitralekha is a 1941 Indian Bollywood film, directed by Kidar Sharma and based on 1934 Hindi novel by the same name by Bhagwati Charan Verma. Its music is by noted classical musician Ustad Jhande Khan, giving popular songs like "Sun sun Neelkamal Muskaye," "Saiyyan Saware Bhaye Baware," and "Tum Jao Bde Bhagwan Bane, Insaan Bano."

It was the second-highest grossing Indian film of 1941. Khan used he used classical Ragas like Bhairavi and Asavari to the score making it influential for classical based Hindi film songs. This was the debut of actor Bharat Bhushan, who later achieved fame with Bhaiju Bawra (1952).


It was remade by Sharma in 1964, also titled Chitralekha, starring Meena Kumari and Ashok Kumar.

Chand lives in a small rural town in India. He is unable to pay the rent, and his landlord evicts him. He re-locates to another town and meets with a young woman named Tara. Both are attracted to each other. Chand is unable to secure employment in this town, and moves elsewhere. Tara waits for several months, but does not hear anything from him. So she decides to go and look for him, hoping to re-kindle her love. She is shocked and surprised to find him with an attractive woman named Rajni, who claims that Chand is her betrothed and both are to get married soon.

Set in the royal court of Janakgarh, the film opens with the palace coup led by the villainous Mangal Singh, resulting in the deaths of the king and queen. Princess Kamala (Madhubala) and her sister are spirited out the court and given over to a family of untouchables. Later, both princesses fall in love with a rakish artist (Kapoor), resulting in Kamala committing suicide.

Two friends, Pancham (K. L. Saigal) and Rekhab (Arun) have just arrived in the city. They are looking for jobs and accommodation. Pancham interested in music, finds a job in a music and dance school to teach singing. There he meets Indu, who teaches dancing to the students. She also happens to be his upstairs neighbour where he has rented a room. Indu lives there with her sister Bindu (Kamala Chatterjee). Rekhab manages to rent a room below a wrestler's (Lala Yakub) accommodation. The two friends fall in love with the two sisters. The wrestler helps Rekhab to develop his physique in order to impress his sweetheart. Through comic situations that follow, the film ends happily.

Kanwar Sahib (Motilal) speeds up on his way to meet the famous artist Vyas (Nagendra Majumdar) staying in the village. On the way he passes the artist's daughter Meera, but doesn't see her. Meera sees him and falls in love with him. Vyas lives in a village with Meera and paints pictures and draws murals to earn a living. Having contracted Vyas to paint murals in his house, Kanwar returns back to his mansion. His father is a lordly landowner, whose relative-cum Diwan tries to exploit him of his riches. Kanwar is interested in scientific work trying to produce a ray that would be able to register pain and pleasure in the brain. The experiment goes badly and Kanwar becomes blind. Vyas and his daughter arrive at the mansion and soon Meera and the blind Kanwar fall in love with each other. The Diwan is unhappy to see the romance between the two and gets Kanwar's father to have Meera sent away. This sends her father into grief and he kills himself.

Deepak (Bharat Bhushan) lives as a tenant in a small room, owned by his landlord Om Prakash Munshi(Om Prakash). Although he is a poet, he is unable to secure any employment. One day he meets with Jyoti (Vyjayanthimala) and both fall in love. After their marriage, there is considerable resentment, and Jyoti's brother, Shekar (Ashok Kumar) refuses to have to do anything with Jyoti. When Shekar offers money to Deepak, Deepak refuses to accept it. Shekar and Jyoti's dad, Daya Shankar (Badri Prasad) sympathises with Jyoti and wants her to be the sole heir to his property after his death. In the meantime, Om Prakash marries his son to a wealthy woman, who does bring in a lot of dowry, but refuses to do any household work, and instead puts her father-in-law to work. As Deepak is unable to get employment, Jyoti is successful in getting employment as a singer on the local radio station, not knowing that Deepak is resentful of her success, and is thinking of separating from her.
