Shyama (Suraiya) gets a job as a servant so she can pay for her younger sister, Kiran's (Geeta Bali) education in the city. Kiran, though, is in love with a rogue, Ajit (Pran). Ajit makes Kiran splurge all the money Shyama sends her on them. Meanwhile, Shyama meets and falls in love with Shyam (Rehman), the son of the family she works for and who is a doctor who wants to treat the poor. With both of being ill-treated by the woman of the house, who is Shyam's step mother, they decide to elope. However, Kiran comes to her, abandoned and impregnated. Shyama goes along with her without informing Shyam in order to find Ajit. They find Ajit but he escapes from them. The two sisters then relocate to another town. Kiran has the child, Shyama works in another house, where in order to get Kiran settled with the young man of the house and to prove her to be without blemish, she takes it upon herself to claim to be the mother of the child. This causes further complications with Shyam, who has managed to trace her out and now believes that she has been unfaithful to him. Wallowing in grief, he falls ill. Finally, with the help of a kindly army colonel, also Ajit's uncle (Ulhas), all ends well that well with a repentant Ajit marrying Kiran and Shyama reunited with Shyam.

Reporter Jitendra (Dharmendra) exposes dangerous working conditions in a mine owned by one of his employer's crooked creditors. He loses his job. When disaster strikes at the mine, Amita (Mala Sinha), daughter of the paper's deceased founder re-employs him. Her interest in him is more than just journalism. Unknown to her, her younger sister (Tanuja) is romantically linked to the reporter. The resultant conflict and anguish culminate in the sisters attempting to sacrifice their future happiness for the sake of the other.

City-based Ashok, who works as a Salesman in a Toy Store, has always dreamed of marrying village-based Ashoo. He is a close friend with his co-worker, Amjad, whose marriage is being finalized with Shabnam. Ashok goes to the village to meet and get Ashoo to marry him but finds she has been abducted by his brother, Bhagat, who had earlier killed her brother, Bhagwan. Ashok manages to rescue her, and they flee Bhagat and his goons in order to try and reach Amjad's wedding ceremony. Amjad is ready to even postpone the wedding in order to give Ashok enough time to make it - but nothing will prepare him for the shock when he gets the news that the train Ashok and Ashoo were traveling in had met with an accident - with very few survivors. Later, Amjad finds Ashok but sadly Ashoo dies. Coincidentally, Shabnam looks exactly like Ashoo and he asks Shabnam to pretend to be Ashoo, only so that his friend could recover and be healthy again. Shabnam reluctantly agrees but Ashok, who is unaware of Ashoo's death, is frustrated to see that Ashoo no longer loves him like before and retreats back even when he holds her hand. Will he realise Amjad's love for him and will Shabnam ever gain her husband's love .

Vijay (Guru Dutt), un poète, ne parvient pas à vivre de ses vers. On lui conseille d’écrire des poèmes d’amour, d’abandonner les réflexions pessimistes sur la nature humaine qui sont son thème de prédilection. Sa famille ne le soutient pas : ses frères vendent ses manuscrits à une usine de pâte à papier et le chassent de la maison. Vijay tente de racheter ses poèmes, mais le gérant de l’usine lui apprend qu’une femme en a fait l’acquisition. La nuit, alors que Vijay dort sur un banc public, il entend une femme, Gulabo (Waheeda Rehman) chanter un de ses textes. Il la suit, jusqu’à la maison close où elle officie. Lorsqu’elle s’aperçoit que Vijay est sans le sou, elle le chasse. En lisant un papier tombé de la poche du poète, elle réalise qu’il est l’auteur des poèmes qu’elle a achetés.

In the era of Guru Ram Das, one cannot leave out Rajni, youngest daughter of Rai Duni Chand, revenue collector (kardar) of Patti. (The story has all the myth, magic and miracles of a genuine Sakhi, but is nevertheless a charming story). Rajni was a Sikh, a disciple of the Guru. The film is set in a prison in around 1934 in pre-Independence India, where Kalyani is serving life imprisonment prison for committing a murder, and we learn the circumstances of her crime in flashback as she divulges it to the jailor. The film is set in Bengal in the 1930s, during the British Raj, where Kalyani (Nutan) is the daughter of the postmaster (Raja Paranjpe) of the village, who falls in love with a freedom fighter, Bikash (Ashok Kumar), who later leaves her in the village promising to come back but never does. The society treats them harshly. Broken by her father's misery and that of her own, Kalyani moves to the city, to the singing of the sad song "O Jaanewale Ho Sake To Laut Ke Aana". In the city she works as a caretaker of an obnoxious and mentally unstable woman, who turns out to be the wife of Bikash. Kalyani learns that her father came to the city looking for her and died in an accident. That prompts her to poison her lover's wife, identifying her as the cause of her miseries in a moment of insane rage. Director Bimalda captures her emotions as she resolves to commit the crime, with light and darkness falling on her face due to a welder's torch and the thumping of Iron in the background, and the ambient sounds as she inches towards the decision, pumping vigorously into a kerosene stove, without uttering a single word through it all. And subsequently confesses to the crime with equal passion.

Sunil (Dharmendra) lives with his mother and sister a middle-class life in Delhi. He works for Chopra & Co., Chartered Accountants. He comes across a beautiful woman posing for a painting, and thinks she is poor and needy, and gives her a tip. The woman's name is Anita, and both are attracted to each other. Sunil and Anita intend to marry, and Sunil even introduces Anita to his mother. One day when attending a party, Sunil is shocked to learn that Anita is a multi-millionaire. Stunned at this deception, he swears he will have nothing to do with her. When Anita attempts to sooth things over, Sunil does cool down. It is then he finds out that Anita's dad, who is serving time, had killed his father, and that Anita mother is still alive, after making her living as a former prostitute.
