Synopsis

The movie begins with Jai(Prabhas) practicing guitar when a girl runs to him and asks him to save her from a gang of goons chasing her. Then Jay, without fighting, resolves the conflict. The girl introduces herself as Manasa (Richa Gangopadhyay). They slowly become friends. But one day she asks Jai to leave her and go as she cannot stand the separation from him if their relationship develops any further. Vasudevan aka Vasu (Vishal) is a Coimbatore-based moneylender and also was the heir to the Kovai Group, a cloth manufacturing conglomerate, until he was disowned by his mother and matriarch of his joint family Rajalakshmi (Raadhika Sarathkumar) due to some misunderstanding. As Sivakkozhundhu was transferred to Coimbatore district to capture Anna Thandavam, the latter had planned to kill him. Anna Thandavam also plans to illegally grab land sold to a village temple by Vasu's late father. These two incidents cause enmity between Vasu and Anna Thandavam.

Bagavathi (Vijay), owns a tea shop cum hotel near Chennai High court. He lives with the aim of bringing up his younger brother Guna (Jai) as a doctor. He befriends a modern girl Anjali (Reemma Sen) while giving a refill to her. She doesn't know that the refill is valuable for Bagavathy and so casually throws it. He admonishes her for that and with the help of a receptionist gets it back. Anjali initially thinks that he is stingy. But later when she sees him helping a lady whose daughter has gone into labour and subsequently beaten up by a policeman, she gains some respect. Soon Bagavathy finds out that Anjali is the daughter of a Judge who is his friend. Guna has a girlfriend Priya with whom he accidentally develops a physical relationship. Guna hides this news from his brother. Guna's love is objected by Priya's father Easwarapandiyan (Ashish Vidyarthi) fearing for the loss of his status and name in society. Soon, in a college function, some goons sent by Easwarapandiyan beat up Guna. Bagavathy finds him and takes him to hospital. He takes the help of his friend Anand(Yugendran Vasudevan Nair) to safeguard his brother from the atrocities of Easwarapandiyan. Bagavathy, to fulfill his brother's wish, tries to convince Priya's father. Easwarapandiyan humilitates him by masking him polish his shoes. Bagavathy does so but despite that Easwarapandiyan says that Guna will die. Guna attempts to marry Priya even without the knowledge of his brother. But Priya's father collapses the marriage and Guna is killed in front of Bagavathy. Anand is also killed after trying to defend Guna.

The story is set in the town of Ranasthali, in year 1989. Bhagat Panigrahi (Nara Rohit) is preparing to become a police officer.
