Synopsis

This is an adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello, revolving around Kannan Perumalayan (Suresh Gopi)), a Theyyam artist who corresponds to Othello, and Thamara (Manju Warrier), the beautiful daughter of the village head. While Unni Thampuran hates Kannan because he had a crush on Thamara, and Paniyan, (Lal) who plays a Koomali, covets the role of Theechamundi which Perumalayan holds. Paniyan plants the seeds of doubt about Thamara's fidelity in Kannan's mind, making him suspect that Thamara and his assistant Kanthan (Biju Menon) are having an affair. Kannan spots a silk robe which he had presented to Thamara in Kanthan's hands.

The movie is all about the relationships between two rare bred men from extremely different strata of society, but more in common than is apparent from the first look. The story is about Anwar (Pritviraj) who discontinues his education further at the Aligarh Muslim University soon after his marriage. Devadathan Chemmathiripadu (Narendra Prasad), a vedic scholar is widely respected by everyone. He successfully completed Somayagam and has gained the title Somayajippadu. Leading a simple life away from all the chaos, Somayajippadu has two sons, Somadathan (Suresh Gopi) and Chithrabhanu (Jayaram). While Somadathan left for Delhi to become a journalist, Chitrabhanu stayed along with his father in order to assist him. Bhanu Namboothiri is now a chief priest in the nearby temple. During his Delhi days, Somadathan got attracted to atheism and became associated with several radical groups. One day he returns to his village to meet up with his family. But, upon arriving home, he finds the daily rituals irritating and starts questioning them. He denounces Vedas as superstition and starts propagating atheism among the villagers.
