Synopsis
Iliac, un jeune masseur, rentre chez lui dans la province de Pampanga et découvre que son père atteint d'une cirrhose a été envoyé aux urgences de l'hôpital où il est mort peu de temps après. Iliac aide à la préparation de l'enterrement de son père, y compris à l'habillement de son père à la morgue. Ensuite la veillée funèbre se déroule avec la famille restée digne et les voisins qui jouent aux cartes, des petites filles qui jouent entre elles, des amoureux qui s'enlacent, des amis à qui l'on sert de la bonne nourriture. L'enterrement suit le lendemain où là encore la vie et la mort se mêlent: de jeunes garçons jouent au basket ball dans le cimetière, alors qu'à côté le cercueil est déposé dans la tombe. Parallèlement, le film déroule les séquences d'Iliac, employé dans un salon de massage pour hommes de Manille, où il masse un écrivain, puis prolonge sa prestation par un acte de prostitution avec ce client. Le corps de son client lui rappelle celui de son père mort. Le film montre également les autres jeunes masseurs avec leurs clients. Ils se confient à eux avec douceur et parfois humour et formulent des rêves d'avenir, pendant qu'ils les massent, puis finalement vendent leurs charmes une fois le massage effectué. La plupart des clients, capricieux et égoïstes, ne cherchent qu'à obtenir des rabais ou à aller plus loin que la négociation tarifée au départ. Tous les masseurs travaillent dans ce lieu pour aider leurs familles. La dernière séquence montre Iliac après son travail qui part en taxi chez sa petite amie, visiblement prostituée comme lui.Acteurs

The story is set in Guagua, Pampanga a decade after the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo which ravaged the province with lahar. It follows the lives of Rodolfo "Mang Rudy" Manansala, a woodcarver, and his three daughters and their relationships with the people close to them in the span of seven summers. Grace, the youngest daughter, marries the mama's boy Conrad, and has to face the reality of leaving the ancestral house, to which she is deeply rooted, to go and live with her in-laws. Much against her will, to the point of staging an escape, she yields to the dictates of tradition. Yet she manages to cope up with married life, and on the fourth year of her marriage gets pregnant with her second child. Lourdes, the middle daughter and married to the weakling Andy Pineda with whom she has a daughter, goes into an illicit affair with a bank manager, for which reason Mang Rudy succumbs to a heart attack and becomes bedridden. For a while numbed by the infidelity of his wife, Andy later realizes his insignificance and retaliates by beating up and nearly killing Lourdes. Lourdes atones for her guilt by ministering to Andy's wounds after he joins the rituals of the flagellants during the Holy Week. However, they both decide to separate. Jess, the eldest daughter, is a lesbian whose bitter luck in life is being unwanted by her own father. Yet she serves Mang Rudy to the hilt after he gets bedridden and makes the common sense of allowing her girlfriend Rowena to move in at the Manansala house, not so much for their own convenience as lovers but for Rowena to help in looking after Mang Rudy and in helping out with the household chores. But when a conflict arises between Lourdes and Rowena, Mang Rudy sends Rowena away. A year later, Mang Rudy succumbs to a second attack and when he dies several months later, Rowena sets foot on the ancestral house once more to pay her last respects. At the wake, Rowena comes to the realization that, like Andy, she never belonged and finally decides to leave Jess. Rowena gets married while Jess, along with her sisters, moves on with life. The story is told in three segments, with each segment told from the point of view of the three daughters. Attached to each segment are social occasion popularly observed in the province of Pampanga in the Philippines, with a symbolic motif for each, represented by the elements sun, fire, water, air, blood, moon and earth. With Rowena's wedding at the end of the film, as in Grace's wedding at the start, a full cycle of life transpired.

Yumi Fukuzawa (Honoka Miki) has been attending Lillian Girls' Academy, a Catholic high school, for about six months when one day, while praying in front of the Virgin Mary statue near the school entrance, she is approached by second-year student Sachiko Ogasawara (Haru) who straightens Yumi's uniform neckerchief. Yumi's classmate Tsutako Takeshima (Alice Hirose) later shows her that she took a photograph of Yumi's meeting with Sachiko earlier that morning. Tsutako agrees to give Yumi the photo, but only if she can display it at the upcoming school festival and get Sachiko's permission to do so as well. As Sachiko is a member of the Yamayuri Council, which acts as the student council, they head over to the Rose Mansion on campus, the meeting place of the council. Yumi and Tsutako are waiting outside in the hallway while the council is having a meeting when Sachiko bursts out of the room and knocks Yumi and herself down. Sachiko apologizes and is about to leave, but Tsutako shows her the photo and asks her permission to display it. Sachiko takes Yumi back into the meeting room, followed by Tsutako, and tells the other members that she has chosen Yumi to be her petite sœur.
