Picnic is a 1966 black and white Hindi language Bollywood film directed by Shaheed Latif. It was produced under the Filmistan banner and had story by Madhusudhan Kalekar with screenplay and dialogues by Krishan Chandar. The music was composed by S. Mohinder while the lyricist was Majrooh Sultanpuri. The cinematographers were Dronacharya and Jagdish Chadha. The film starred Manoj Kumar, Kalpana, Azra, and Shobha Khote and also had the lyricist Anand Bakshi in a guest appearance.

The film was directed by Shaheed Latif who had directed Guru Dutt's Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi (1964) earlier, and was directing the unfinished Picnic (1964), another film from Guru Dutt Productions. That film starring Guru Dutt and Sadhana was left incomplete due to Dutt's suicide in 1964.

The story involved a pair of lovers forced to marry different people arranged for by their parents. They then plan to make life miserable for their partners in order to get easy divorces and be able to marry each other.

Synopsis

Kalpana (Shobha Khote) and Vinod (Manoj Kumar) are in love but meet opposition from their parents. The respective parents have arranged partners for them and the two give in to the demands. They meet to plan a way out of this dilemma and decide to behave in manner unacceptable to their spouses. Vinod is married to a simple, kind and gentle girl Asha (Azra), while Kalpana marries an army officer. Finally with the help of Vinod's Uncle (David), Asha is able to win the love of her husband, while Kalpana is happily married to her army husband.

Reporter Jitendra (Dharmendra) exposes dangerous working conditions in a mine owned by one of his employer's crooked creditors. He loses his job. When disaster strikes at the mine, Amita (Mala Sinha), daughter of the paper's deceased founder re-employs him. Her interest in him is more than just journalism. Unknown to her, her younger sister (Tanuja) is romantically linked to the reporter. The resultant conflict and anguish culminate in the sisters attempting to sacrifice their future happiness for the sake of the other.

Sunil Mehra (played by Manoj Kumar) completes his medical studies and becomes a doctor. He is kidnapped by dacoits in Himalayas and harassed and left badly hurt. Phoolwa, a village girl (played by Mala Sinha) find him in his poor state and then takes care of his till he becomes fit. He then leaves for his home in the city. But he decides to go back to Himalayas and help poor people who don't have proper facilities and no good medical care. Villagers resist his arrival as they don't trust his modern medicines but believe only in local healers. Worried for him, Sunil's family sends his fiancée Neeta (played by Shashikala) to get him back. Sunil in turn asks Neeta, who also is a doctor, to stay there with him. Firm on his decision, he stays. He also falls in love with Phoolwa.

Monish Rai (Ashok Kumar) comes from a wealthy family, and is in love with Deviyani (Suchitra Sen), who is poor.
