Venkatachalam (Sarath Babu) and Indumathi (Sumithra) are siblings. Indumathi hates men and she is adamant that she will never get married. Sanjeevi (Kamal) is a friend of Venkatachalam and often visits his house. Sanjeevi likes Indumathi's attitude and starts teasing her many times, they often quarrel as well. Though Indumathi too starts liking him, she is too egotistic to show her romantic side to Sanjeevi as she doesn't want to remove her stubborn attitude 'mask'.

Kali (Rajinikanth) is a winch operator at a village power plant. Although a reputed troublemaker, he occasionally performs good deeds for the local community. Kali and his younger sister Valli (Shoba)—upon whom he dotes—were orphaned during their childhood, and have no close family. Nazar and Saratbabu are two rich and powerful rivals in a village. Nazar’s daughter Supriya and Saratbabu’s son Kalyan study in same college, where they both engage in few fights and bets. Slowly their love blossoms under these petty things and they reach their village, where they are separated at railway station itself by their parents. Chandralekha, an orthodox Brahmin girl, falls in love with, Rahim, a Muslim boy. Whereas, Salima loves Rahim since her childhood. Jamal, upset that her sister has gone mad, kills Chandralekha and Rahim at the railway station. Then, the police kills Jamal. The message of the movie is that love should be beyond religion, caste, and creed.
