Premanagar or Prema Nagar (City of Love) is a 1971 Tollywood blockbuster, Drama film produced by D. Ramanaidu and directed by K. S. Prakash Rao. The story is based on the Prema Nagar novel written by Koduri Kausalya Devi. The film's cast includes Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Vanisree, Gummadi Venkateswara Rao, and Kaikala Satyanarayana.

The producer D. Ramanaidu made the same films in three languages. Tamil remake of this film was Vasantha Maligai released in 1972 and in Hindi was made as Prem Nagar released in 1974. In Tamil the pair was played by Sivaji Ganesan and Vanisri as well and in Hindi by Rajesh Khanna and Hema Malini.

Karan Singh lives a wealthy lifestyle in a palace along with his widowed mother, an elder brother, Shamsher, his wife and daughter. His mother, Rani Maa, spending most of her time playing cards, left his upbringing to his nanny. As a result, Karan ended up believing her to be his real mother. Now grown up and turned into a womanizer and an alcoholic, he comes to the rescue of a former air hostess, Lata, who is being molested by her boss. Subsequently he hires her as his secretary and allows her family to move into one of his cottages. Progressively, Lata attempts to change his bad habits. She initially meets with opposition, but eventually succeeds and they fall in love. Karan even builds a palace and names it "Prem Nagar" ("city of love"). However, one day their romance is shattered when Lata is accused of interfering in palace affairs and stealing a valuable necklace. Consequently, a much humiliated Lata and her family move out.

Hyderabad-bred Narain goes to a village, where he meets and falls in love with a village belle, Yashodra. She also is attracted to him, and both get married. After their marriage, both go to live with Narain's parents, brother, and sister-in-law, Lalita, and her son, Sonu. Yashodra gets close to Sonu, and starts to spend all her time with him. This raises some concerns with Lalita, which results in some acrimony. Tragically, Sonu passes away, leaving Yashodra devastated and depressed. She gets pregnant and gives birth to a baby girl, but cannot get Sonu out of her mind. Her depression gives way to insanity, as she keeps on seeing Sonu in every child, and as a result she is institutionalized. Narain has taken to alcohol in a big way and drowns his sorrows and frustrations day and night in a drunken stupor. As a result, his daughter is adopted by Lalita and his brother, without knowing who her real parents are. Years pass by, her daughter, Asha, has grown up and is herself a mother of a baby boy, and settled in the U.S.. Asha arrives in India for a visit and the entire family assembles to visit Yashodra. They find her holding a piece of log, covered in a blanket, singing to it as if it where Sonu. It is here that Asha finds out who her real parents are, and it is here that she will be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice.

The movie starts with the marriage of a young couple Krishnaveni (Vanisri) and Krishnamraju, and continues with happy family life and kids. The couple decides to go to a tourist place called Amaravati. Krishnaveni has subconscious bad memories of her childhood abuse and the place where she was molested. She starts having hallucinations, overwhelming fear and other symptoms of mental illness. She is sent to a mental hospital and treated by psychologists. After her return from hospital, she is not welcomed back by her family members, kids, neighbours or even her friends. Society is afraid of her disease. Evil people misuse this opportunity. Slight disagreements or arguments are also treated as a sign of her disease. She cannot regain the affection of her husband and kids. Her misfortunes continue until she becomes ill again. The movie ends on a sad note, but conveys a message about society's misconceptions about mental illness.
