When Richard Barthelmess goes off to study for four years at a university in Mexico, his home in California is a part of Mexico. By the time he returns (around the year 1850), however, California has been overrun by Americans. Barthelmess finds his family living in fear of unscrupulous Americans and he finds the family estate is in shambles. Although the land deeds granted by the Spanish throne are supposed to be recognized by the United States government as proof of ownership, some crooked California land commissioners are attempting to rook the old owners. Barthelmess becomes embroiled in an argument with a federal official. He has brought 3000 head of cattle from his uncle to deliver to this official, played by Fred Kohler. Barthelmess flirts with a girl that Kohler considers to be his girlfriend and this leads the official to try up Barthelmess and lash him across the face. Barthelmess is eventually saved from further assault by the sheriff, played by James Rennie.

Jerry Larrabee (Richard Barthelmess) is framed by rival gangster Spadoni (Louis Natheaux) and sent to prison, where he is befriended by a kind and understanding warden (William Holden). Through the warden's patient influence, Jerry becomes interested in music and forms a prison band, broadcasting over the radio. Jerry's singing deeply moves his radio listeners and soon Jerry is given a pardon by the governor.

Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, plusieurs jeunes aviateurs anglais sont hébergés dans la ferme des Berthelot près du front. Philip Blythe, l'un d'entre eux, tombe amoureux de Jeannie, la fille du fermier, et lui déclare son amour avant de partir pour une mission dangereuse. Son avion est abattu et Jeannie va chercher à le retrouver dans différents hôpitaux de campagne. Elle y rencontre le père de Philip qui lui fait croire que ce dernier est mort. En souvenir, elle fait parvenir dans sa chambre un bouquet de lilas et Philip, reconnaissant ces fleurs, arrive à se déplacer à la fenêtre à temps pour la retenir.

Jean Waddington, Ted Larrabee et Kitty Flanders sont des amis d'enfance. Jean et Ted ont tous deux des parents divorcés et, lorsque, devenus adultes, Jean tombe amoureuse de Ted, elle lui demande de faire ses preuves avant d'accepter sa demande en mariage. Il accepte, mais lorsque Kitty donne une soirée dans l'immeuble où il a son bureau, il oublie le travail. Mais Kitty réalise qu'il n'y a pas vraiment d'affection entre elle et Ted, elle prend alors du poison. Après sa mort, Ted retrouve Jean.

Lee Clavering (Tearle), a playwright in New York, falls in love with an Austrian countess, Madame Zatianny (Griffith).
