The movie, set against a rural back drop, was most successful in the North and the East of India. Lachak lachak jaye jawani is the most famous song from this film sung by Amit Kumar and Asha Bhosle. Rajesh Khanna makes special appearances in the film as the presumably intended groom of Hema Malini. It was re-released and dubbed into Bhojpuri in 2006.

Shankar's (Amitabh Bachchan) father, who is a village temple priest is murdered by Tiger (Amjad Khan). His mother and sister are torched in their house. After his father, mother and sister are killed, Shankar decides to bring justice by himself and goes to the palace of Tiger. Instead of killing Tiger, Shankar blinds him. Shankar blames God for doing nothing and grows up as a Nastik (atheist). Shankar flees to the city and becomes a thief. He joins forces with Balbir (Pran) and Gauri (Hema Malini). At one time, he is shot by Tiger for stealing his goods. In an attempt to hide, he finds his mother, who he thought was dead in the fire. In a rude awakening, he decides to stop stealing and join with his long lost family. Incidentally, Balbir saves Shankar's sister Shanti (Rita Bhaduri), who is chased by Tiger's men when she goes outside to bring medicine for her mother. Shankar reunites with his long lost mother and sister. Shankar finds out from his sister that the enemy who he thought had killed, is actually alive. He decides to finish him off once and for all.

Kishan (Rajesh Khanna) is the spoilt son of a rich businessman. He is a medical student, for whom the life is all about playing pranks and troubling people around. Finally he is taught a lesson in humility by fellow student, Madhu (Hema Malini). He undergoes a dramatic change in outlook and falls in love with her. But his joy is short-lived as Kapilkumar (Danny Denzongpa) kills Madhu as she is the only witness to a murder. On the deathbead, Kishan promises Madhu that he would kill whoever is responsible for the death. Kishan is devastated and carries on a man hunt for KapilKumar. He finally recognizes Kapil in a train and in the ensuing scuffle, Kapil pushes Kishan off the running train. When Kishan regains consciousness, he is amazed to see Madhu (Hema Malini). On following her, he realizes that he is the twin sister of Madhu, Chanchal. He then starts practising medicine in their small village as this was what Madhu wanted to do. With time, Both are drawn towards each other until one day Kapil is in front of them once again. What Kishan does not know is that Kapil is his elder brother who was separated when they were young.

Don, chef d'un gang international, est traqué puis tué par un officier de police, le commissaire D'Silva. Celui-ci décide de ne révéler à personne la mort de Don. Police inspector Anand is very honest, he is known for his honesty, diligence and bravery. He single handedly captures and arrests notorious smuggler and criminal Jack Ranjit, who is sentenced to several years of jail. Anand Vinod Khanna in disguise, also captures gangster Gulkhan Amjad Khan, who is also sentenced to a long term in jail. Anand's wife Rekha is not very honest and trustworthy and has an affair with another man named Somesh. There are a lot of fights and arguments between husband and wife and Anand threatens to kill her. He starts following his wife hoping to catch her and Somesh redhanded. Shortly after that Rekha and Somesh are found dead and Anand is arrested for their murder though he has not killed them. To prove his innocence and to find the real murderers he escapes from jail and surprisingly comes back face to face with his foes. Ultimately he is proved innocent and the real murderer is arrested.
