Soekarno (Indonesian: Soekarno: Indonesia Merdeka — "Indonesia's Independence") is a 2013 Indonesian biographical film directed by Hanung Bramantyo, and written by Ben Sihombing. This film tells the story of the life of the late Sukarno, the first President of Indonesia. Sukarno, who was born with the name "Kusno", was one of the many historical figures who played a part in the fight for Indonesia's independence. This film follows the life of Sukarno from the day he was born until his decalaration of the Republic of Indonesia's independence. This film starred Ario Bayu as "Soekarno", Lukman Sardi, Maudy Kusnaedi, Tika Bravani, and Tanta Ginting.
On December 13, 2013, Central Jakarta Business Management Court (PTUN) agreed with Rachmawati Soekarnoputri to halt the film's release (temporary decision). Some film experts have said that the film was too commercialised and had taken liberties in its depiction of historical events and characters. Despite this, on 7 January 2014, the PTUN decided to withdraw the temporary decision, so the film was allowed to be shown.
The film was selected as the Indonesian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards, but was not nominated.Synopsis
Soekarno is based on the life of Sukarno, the first Indonesian president. In 1931, The Dutch East Indies Government in Java Island captured Sukarno, an aspiring young man who wanted to free Indonesia from Dutch colonialism. He was then put in Banceuy Prison at Bandung, Indonesia. Sukarno found a way to fight back by delivering his famous defense oration "Indonesia Accuses!" (Indonesia Menggugat) in his trial at Bandung Laandraad Courthouse. This story follows the life of Sukarno from his childhood until he proclaimed Indonesia's independence with Mohammad Hatta.
