The Lady from Cheyenne is a 1941 American comedy western film directed by Frank Lloyd and starring Loretta Young, Robert Preston and Edward Arnold.

Synopsis

In the 1860s after receiving an inheritance a Philadelphia school teacher heads west to Wyoming to establish a new school to educated settler's children. However she encounters a corrupt tycoon who is determined to gain control of the water rights of her schoolhouse. She eventually lobbies to gain woman the right to vote in local elections, and defeats the villain with the assistance of a lawyer who she eventually marries.

The story revolves around a Florence Brent (Rita Jolivet) who is an American heiress who wishes to marry a Duke in Europe. The father of the duke wants her to have a title before marriage however, so she quickly marries the Duke's friend who is a Count with plans to quickly divorce him and retain the title. After the marriage though, she finds out that the Duke is already married. After all that, Florence's sweetheart arrives from America with a pistol and tells the Count he wants to marry her. She decides to go off with her sweetheart, and moves back to New York with him.

As described in a film magazine, after a long sea voyage, Larry Smith (Farnum) comes home to find his sister (Bower) dead, the victim of some unknown person. Shortly after his mother (Drew) dies of a broken heart, Smith sets sail with a determination to wreck vengeance upon the murderer. Unknowingly he has become a mate to Captain Sutton (Nye), the man who ruined his sister. At a South Sea port Smith meets Violet North (Carmen), known as the Painted Lady. Smith falls in love with her and proposes, but she will not marry him because of her past, and the next day sails away with the rest of her party. Logan (Robbins), one of the "dogs" on Sutton's vessel, was a witness to Sutton's attack on the Smith girl and for this reason Sutton sails away leaving Logan on shore alone. Logan meets Smith and tells his tale. Logan and Smith search the islands for a trace of Sutton. When a storm rises and Violet, aboard a yacht, is tossed onto the island occupied by Smith. Sutton also comes ashore on a boat. Thirst for revenge seizes Smith and he attacks Sutton, who dies in the fight. Violet nurses Sutton back to health and sanity.

When Richard Barthelmess goes off to study for four years at a university in Mexico, his home in California is a part of Mexico. By the time he returns (around the year 1850), however, California has been overrun by Americans. Barthelmess finds his family living in fear of unscrupulous Americans and he finds the family estate is in shambles. Although the land deeds granted by the Spanish throne are supposed to be recognized by the United States government as proof of ownership, some crooked California land commissioners are attempting to rook the old owners. Barthelmess becomes embroiled in an argument with a federal official. He has brought 3000 head of cattle from his uncle to deliver to this official, played by Fred Kohler. Barthelmess flirts with a girl that Kohler considers to be his girlfriend and this leads the official to try up Barthelmess and lash him across the face. Barthelmess is eventually saved from further assault by the sheriff, played by James Rennie.

Letty Shell, une fille de modeste condition, aspire à trouver un riche époux qui la ferait s'élever socialement. Quand elle rencontre Nevill Letchmore, elle concentre toutes ses cartes sur lui. Croyant l'aimer, elle fait tout pour le conquérir. Elle insiste encore, même lorsqu'elle découvre que l'homme est déjà marié. D'autres opportunités se présentent cependant à elle : elle accepte que son patron, Mandeville, lui fasse la cour, celui-ci voulant l'épouser. Mais l'homme s'avère trop rude, et après avoir accepté une invitation au restaurant, Letty retourne vers Letchmere. Cela prendra un certain temps à Letty pour se rendre compte que ses valeurs sont dépourvues de probité. Après un incident qui irrite Letchmere, mais révèle son mépris d'une classe sociale inférieure, elle finit par comprendre qu'elle ferait mieux d'épouser un homme qu'elle aime vraiment. C'est ainsi qu'elle se tournera vers Richard Perry, un jeune photographe désargenté, qui devra travailler dur pour s'en sortir, mais finalement aidé par la fortune d'un oncle riche.
