Usha Parinayam (Telugu: ఉషా పరిణయము; English: Marriage of Usha) is one the famous Indian dramas and films produced in different languages. It is also a popular Yakshagana. The play was written in 1901 by Vedam Venkataraya Sastry.

Synopsis

Banasura, the king of demons undertakes severe penance to solicit the blessings of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva appears to Banasura and asks him to reveal his desire. Banasura asks for Shiva, Parvati and their entire family to guard the entrance to his city Sonapuri. Shiva goes to Sonapuri with his entire family including the Pramadhaganas to guard the city. This provides the arrogant Banasura with over confidence and he wages war against the devas. The devas are no match for the mighty Banasura who is under the protection of Shiva and are defeated in the ensuing battle. He further challenges Shiva, the very power under whose allegiance he defeated the devas. Angered with Banasura’s arrogance, Shiva curses him that when the flag of your chariot falls without a reason, Sri Krishna will fight you and humble your pride.

The story of the film is from the Hindu epic Ramayana. According to the father's wish Rama with Sita and Lakshmana goes to the forest. Bharata in stead of becoming the crown king, as his mother's wish, goes to the forest and requests Rama to return to Ayodhya. Refusing to disobey the orders of their father, he gives away his Padukas to Bharata. Taking them back to Ayodhya, he crowns them and rules the kingdom for 14 years.

Sharfunissa alias Nadira is a dancer in the Emperor’s court. She is bestowed the name Anarkali meaning pomegranate blossom, on account of her dazzling beauty. Prince Salim is smitten by her and they fall in love. Learning that his son has fallen for a lowly courtesan, Akbar is furious and warns them to stay away from each other. Maharajah of Malava Kingdom was killed. The kingdom is ruled by his younger brother Rudrasimha (S. V. Ranga Rao). The son heirs the kingdom is Jayasimha (N. T. Rama Rao). Vijayasimha (Kanta Rao) is son of Rudrasimha. Rudrasimha tried to kill Jayasimha twice and to occupy the kingdom completely. Knowing about this, Jayasimha overnight ran away from the kingdom. Maharajah of neibouring kingdom was arrested by the enemies and escapes with his daughter. Jayasimha saves the Princess (Waheeda Rehman) and later releases Maharajah. They love each other. He lives in the house of valiant Ranadhir (Gummadi) with the name of Bhavani. Ranadhir has a son Subuddhi (Relangi) and a daughter Kalindi (Anjali Devi). Kalindi loves Jayasimha. Senadhipati (Rajanala) tries to control the Princess. Rudrasimha and Senadhipati jointly plan to arrest the Maharajah and Jayasimha. After knowing Jayasimha considers her as his sister, Kalindi dies in attempting to save Jayasimha. Jayasimha with the help of Vijayasimha exterminates the enemies. Rudrasimha, the traitor is killed by his son Vijayasimha. Jayasimha becomes the Maharajah and rules both the kingdoms.
