The film opens with the revelation that violence has escalated in India, in which the central villain is Mogambo (Amrish Puri). Mogambo is a brilliant yet insane General whose goal is to conquer India. From his island, modelled after the island of Dr. No, Mogambo monitors the evil-doings perpetrated by his henchmen. Virendra "Viren" Pratap Singh (Anil Kapoor) travels to Rajasthan with his governess, affectionately called Dai Jaa (Waheeda Rehman). He meets the beautiful Pallavi (Sridevi) and falls in love with her. However, she is older than he is, though this does not bother Viren. During a property dispute and a court case, Pallavi's father dies of a heart attack. She is shattered and goes into isolation. At the wake, Viren goes to console her, when she runs past him—towards Siddhharth, the man she loves. Viren is heartbroken but, to fulfill Pallavi's father's dying wish, he arranges the wedding between Siddhharth and Pallavi. Allowing Pallavi to live her life happily, Viren leaves for London.

Jagmohan Lal aka Jugran is a crime lord who wants to climb up the crime ladder. Once, when Customs Officer Verma tries to nab him, he escapes. To save his skin, Jugran kills his twin brother Manmohan Lal and takes the identity of latter. The world is led to believe that Jugran is still on the run. Meanwhile, Jugran kills Verma and a Dr. Ashok, destroying both the families in process. While Verma's orphaned sons Ramesh and Ravi are separated from each other, Dr. Ashok's daughter Seema is left with her distraught mother, who has lost her sanity.

Vijay Chopra (Anil Kapoor), qui a été élevé aux États-Unis, revient en Inde pour succéder à son père, Vishwanath Chopra (Anupam Kher), dans l'entreprise familiale. Il a un mode de vie occidental et ne fait pas grand cas des traditions indiennes. Vishwanath espère apporter un peu de stabilité dans la vie de son fils par le mariage mais ce dernier n'y prête aucune attention. Vishwanath, qui a beaucoup d'estime pour sa secrétaire Megha (Kajol), incite Vijay à la rencontrer. Les deux hommes trouvent enfin un compromis ; Vijay consent à épouser Megha, mais avec un contrat de mariage à l'essai : cette union ne sera valable qu'un an et ne sera prolongée que si les deux partenaires se sentent réellement complices. Dans le cas contraire, Megha devra s'en retourner définitivement chez sa famille... Bien que furieux de la décision de son fils, Vishwanath accepte un tel mariage pensant que Megha est la femme idéale qui saura faire changer d'opinion Vijay sur le mariage. Megha refuse dans un premier temps l'offre, mais issue d'une famille modeste composée de deux sœurs, Manju (Sudha Chandran) et Maya (Gracy Singh), ainsi que d'un frère, Sudhakar (Raju Shrestha), elle se résout à épouser Vijay pour des raisons financières.

Kandivli-based Sachidanand Agnihotri is a honest school-teacher, who has always faced problems due to his honesty, first with Poornima School; then in a Government school, and now he has come forward to testify against the sexual assault and murder of a young woman from Worli. Sachidanand points an accusing finger at Nagesh, the son of prominent and influential Jaspal Rana. Sachidanand's family, which consists of his wife, Gayetri, and son, Vishal, attempt in vain to talk him out of testifying. The Police are forced to arrest Nagesh and hold him in a cell. Then the Police, headed by a corrupt Assistant Commissioner of Police, Kamble, attempt to intimidate Sachidanand and follow him everywhere on the pretext of protecting him. Sachidanand is literally driven out of his mind, and on the day of the testimony, Nagesh's lawyer, Ashok Pradhan, confuses him to such an extent that Sachidanand kills himself. Vishal, who is being held in prison for assaulting several policemen, breaks out, abducts Nagesh, and then kills Ashok Pradhan. When Kamble comes to Nagesh's rescue, Vishal kills both of them. He then hunts down Jaspal and eventually kills him. On the run from the Police, he recruits prominent advocate, Khurana, who defends him and gets him acquitted. After the acquittal, instead of thanking his lawyer, Vishal surprisingly kills him in open court.
