Yamanam is a 1992 Malayalam film, directed by Bharath Gopi, and starring Archana, Santha Devi, Syama and Nedumudi Venu.

Synopsis

A physically disabled girl Ambili (Archana) is restricted to a wheelchair because of a childhood attack of polio. Unable to move out of home, she has only to fantasize the exteriors. She turns terribly introvert, fathoming the truth within and becoming positive towards people. She is skilled at making models and toys. She and her widowed mother are gradually sidelined in their own home by her brother Devan and his wife Raji.

It is from a festival of the family temple that the movie starts; a very auspicious moment. Once a prestigious Brahmin family, Poovulla Kovilakom is now in the verge of destruction of all means. The Kovilakom is now administered by Ravi, Ettan Thampuran. His younger brother Aniyan Thampuran (Unni), though an adult, is a meek and gullible person. He has no interest in the matters concerning the governance and administration of a seemingly big family. He often plays with children and among the people of the place, he has gotten no respect and power because of his inefficacy. Ettan Thampuran’s misadministration leads the house and family to debts which is exploited by the land-agent Pangunni Nair who arrange people to buy the Kovilakom’s land. Ettan Thampuran’s wife called ‘ettathi’ is a very domineering kind of a person who does nothing significant. She has a company, Pangunni Nair’s daughter with her all the time and with whom Ettan Thampuran has an extra marital relationship of an unwritten consent. Kalyaniyamma, relative of the two brothers, who cares Aniyan Thampuran as a mother cares her child, is one among the only persons who support and understand him. Aniyan Thampuran’s friend Madhavan Kutty, though belongs to a lower caste has a relationship with Indira who belongs to the caste or family of Pothuvals. Indira’s family has some financial difficulties and their condition is not so good. One day she elopes with Madhavan Kutty. This becomes a news in the place but about which Aniyan Thampuran finds nothing wrong. Indira’s brother Rajan is a jobless person who sings in the temple over which the Kovilakom has some power, probably that is passed on from different generations.

The story revolves around Aniyan Thampuran (Mohanlal), a naive and innocent prince of an erstwhile royal family, and his household in a village of Kerala. His family is heavily indebted by the wayward lifestyle of his elder brother Chettan Thampuran (Sukumaran). Chettan Thampuran's untimely death forces Aniyan to take responsibility for the family. Sammohanam tells the story of a mysteriously seductive girl, Pennu (Archana) in a quiet village to which she has temporarily relocated, in search of her missing grandfather, Karuvan Valyachan. She creates a strange chasm among male folks, breaking marriages and old friendships. Chandu (Murali), a wealthy farmer who owns paddy fields was the first to fall for her charms and even breaks up with his wife Jaanu (Bindu Panicker) and family. Later when Pennu started wooing Chindan (Balakrishnan), a jaggery mill owner and a close friend of Chandu, he cannot stand it and attacked Chindan with a sickle, chopping off his earlobe. Then comes Ummini (Nedumudi Venu), a travelling seller with his pair of horses. He is an old alley of Pennu's grandfather. Soon he too got enchanted and fell for Pennu's charm. Ambu (Sarath), a helper of Chandu also has a hidden passion for Pennu, even though he is much younger to Pennu. Chandu sees Ummini and Pennu together and becomes angry and fought Ummini with his sickle. Ambu tries to intervene and gets accidentally knifed to death by Chandu. Chandu out of guilt and grief commits suicide by jumping in to a waterfall. Finally Pennu leaves the village alone, after torching her house, having fractured the village community with her sexuality.

The film begins with Police Officer Jeevan(Biju Menon) taking charge of Mangalore city Police. He learns from his suboridinate Sudhakaran Nair(Sadiq) that the city is still ruled by underworld don Govindji (Thilakan). Navaneeth Krishnan a.k.a. Kishanji (Suresh Gopi) is Govindji's lead henchman. Govindji acts as a sort of Godfather to him. Kishan has a face-off with Jeevan and Jeevan gets injured in the fight. Jeevan later is surprised to see Kishan during a train journey but it turns out that it is Ananthakrishnan a.k.a. Ananthu (Suresh Gopi), Kishan's identical twin; who unlike Kishan is a well educated and righteous person. Jeevan visits their family home in Kerala to confirm the facts. He learns that Kishan, despite being from a well-off family and being topper at school, ran off during his teenage and joined the gangs of Mangalore owing to a punishing father(Narendra Prasad). Jeevan also meets Kishen's uncle(Nedumudi Venu) and his daughter Manikkutty(Lena) who is Ananthu's fiancee.
