The story centers around the Chandragiri family whose head Madhava Menon is liked by all in the village. His only son Arjun who is a student in Manipal. As Madhava Menon's popularity rises and spreads to other parts, so does the number of enemies who feel that he is stealing the limelight from them. Things reach a pass where Arjun had to be summoned from Manipal to clear up the atmosphere and restore order. The constant struggles between Madhava Menon and Arjun Madhav on one side and their enemies on the other side is the main theme in the story.

Jayaraman (Jayasurya) is popularly known as Kunjaliyan (Young Brother-in-law) in Gopalapuram, a village in the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border. He is the younger brother of three sisters. The sisters were caring him as their own child since the death of his father and mother. Jayaraman was the pet of his sisters and he was not interested in to do any job. He is lazy. Devar madom Narayanan (Mammootty) is accused of killing his father, for being cruel to his mother, at the age of 13 and serves a sentence in a juvenile home. When he returns, he becomes leader of the people of Perumalpuram village. He ensures the village is devoid of all wrong doers by expelling them from the village. His enemies are his uncle Kunjambu Nair (Nedumudi Venu) and wife Indrani (Seema). Kunjambu Nair hated Narayanan killing his brother, although Kunjambu Nair and his son Giri (Siddique) tried in many ways to kill Narayanan. At one point Giri almost succeeded in killing Devar madom Narayanan. But Narayanan again didn’t react. He was on good terms with Kunjambu Nair’s daughter (Sandhya) and his Murapennu (Aditi Rao). Giri tries to sell his land in Perumalpuram to some outsider whose arrival, Narayanan knew, would destroy the harmony of the village. That is when Narayanan decides to react.
