Anubrata Basu (born 5 October 1989 in Calcutta), is a Bengali film actor. Born in India, he started acting through local theatre performances. He received his first commercial acting break with Anjan Dutt's Madly Bangali, where he played one of the main characters, Benji. Since then he has acted in films like Chatrak amd Gandu. In Gandu, his performance attracted controversy, as he appeared nude. Ever since he is known fondly in the industry as 'The Gandu'.

The film looks at a Bengali joint family of Kolkata in the present time. The grandfather (Soumitra Chatterjee) is modern, mingles freely with youngsters and wears hip clothes. The parents (Anuradha Roy and Pradip Mukherjee) are comparatively conventional but generally do not interfere in their kids' lives. The oldest, Rahul (Souvik Kundagrami), a successful NRI, returns to base with his wife (Swastika Mukherjee) with plans of opening a restaurant of American food. The second son, Ronnie (Parambrato), is a corporate honcho going steady with a rich Marwari girl called Swati (Rachita Chauhan) but is not sure about whether he really is in love with her or whether the slightly crazy Ishaani (Raima Sen) fascinates him more. The youngest, Raj (Anubrata), is a wannabe filmmaker with a mind of his own and his pockets filled with money doled out by the elders. The film closes with Rahul and his wife going back to the US to open a Bengali restaurant called Maach Misti & More.

The movie is set on the life of an unnamed protagonist who is called Gandu by most who address him in the movie (an Indian slang/swear word that would literally translate to 'of the ass', the English translation running in the subtitle translates it to the English 'Asshole'). Gandu is portrayed as a frustrated teenager whose state of mind is shown by intercuts of him rapping in Bengali (it is later revealed in the movie that the protagonist is a member of a rap band). Gandu's mother seemingly supports the family through the magnanimity of her 'lover' Dasbabu (an unvoiced character who appears frequently) Gandu's mother and Dasbabu are shown having graphic sex a number of times. Gandu himself is shown repeatedly sneaking into the room of the copulating couple to steal money from Dasbabu's wallet. Gandu seemingly has complex emotions regarding this stealing and takes care to hide from his mother.

Madly Bangalee is a Bengali rock band that inspires the film’s title. They rehearse in a dowdy garage of Kolkata, owned by Bobby (Lew Hilt), who owns Bobby’s Garage. Four young boys with stardust in their eyes practise their numbers not knowing what they are really aiming at. But the garage is under threat from a South Kolkata don Baburam (Chandan Sen). One morning, an elderly man, San (Anjan Dutt), arrives from "America and Paris." Baaji, (Sumit) the drummer who is a Muslim had to drop out of school. He escapes from the trap of turning a terrorist like his older brother Sultan. He later becomes a police officer who bashes up everyone who tries to bribe him. Neon (Tanaji) plays the bass guitar but, sucked into the world of drugs, he disappears from the face of the earth with his guitar. Pablo, lead singer, lead guitarist and lyricist, leaves for the US and the group breaks up. Bobby dies.
