Zooni Ali Beg (Kajol) est une jeune Kashemiri aveugle qui décide, avec l'accord de ses parents, de participer à une visite à New Delhi, en Inde. Lors de son voyage, elle rencontre Rehan Khan (Aamir Khan), le guide, qui séduit par son charme, son éloquence et sa beauté décide de la courtiser. Zooni en tombe amoureuse. Après quelques péripéties, Zooni apprend qu'elle pourrait recouvrer la vue grâce à une chirurgie laser. Elle apprend la bonne nouvelle à ses parents qui décident de venir la voir à l'hôpital, et Zooni ouvre les yeux pour la première fois sur eux. Mais ces derniers ont l'air inquiets, ils pleurent, ce que Zooni prend pour de la joie. Mais elle est enceinte de Rehan. Ils apprendront plus tard que Rehan est mort dans une explosion, ce dernier évènement n'est autre qu'un complot : Rehan est un terroriste kashmiri. Sept ans ont passé et Rehan junior a presque 6 ans. La petite famille vit tranquille, jusqu'au jour où un homme frappe à la porte.

À la suite de représailles terroristes qui ont causé la mort de son frère et laissé son père gravement handicapé, Ajay Singh Rathod abandonne ses études, s'installeà Bombay et s'engage dans la police. The film is set between June and December 1992, the days preceding the infamous demolition of the Babri Masjid at Ayodhya in the Indian province of Uttar Pradesh by Hindu fanatics. Relationship between Naseem, a 15-year-old schoolgirl belonging to a middle class Bombay based Muslim family and his ailing grandfather takes the story forward as the family watches with increasing horror on their TV the news of the growing tension between Muslims and Hindus. The grandfather keeps regaling her with stories of life marked by communal harmony in the pre-independence city of Agra. As communal tension erupts in the city of Bombay, Naseem notices changing dynamics at her school and in the neighborhood, while her grandfather watches helplessly at a city getting deeply divided on communal lines. The old man dies on December 6 coinciding with the news of the destruction of the mosque.

13-year-old Riyaz (Amit Phalke) lives a poor lifestyle in Bombay, India, with his grandmother, Fayyuzi (Surekha Sikri), and her sister, Mehmooda Begum alias Mammo (Farida Jalal). Quite outspoken and embittered over his dad abandoning him, Riyaz does not have many friends, save for Rohan. When Mammo plans a surprise birthday party for him, Riyaz is offended as he believes his friends will make fun of him as his lifestyle is not as good as theirs. Fayyuzi and Riyaz have an argument with Mammo, and she leaves for the mosque at Haji Ali; she returns when they apologize. Although Mammo was born in Panipat during the British Raj, she was one of thousands of Muslims who left for Pakistan after Partition. She and her husband automatically become Pakistani citizens. Although childless, her marriage is a happy one until her husband's death. Over property matters, Mammo is thrown out of the house by her relatives.
