Rajeshwari Sachdev is a Hindi film actress and singer (Hulle Hullare fame), who is most known for her role in Shyam Benegal's film Sardari Begum (1996), for which she won the 1997 National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Sachdev co-hosted the Zee TV musical show, Antakshari from 1994 to 2001 with Annu Kapoor. In 2005, she along with her husband Varun Badola, took part a reality TV, Dance competition show, Nach Baliye.

Mira (Neha) comes from a very wealthy family, however, she wants to get married to Akash Sharma (Jatin Grewal), who is not so wealthy. Mira asks Akash to ask forgiveness from his brother which the former refuses. Mira's family forcibly takes her away from Akash. She is also forced to leave behind her son Rahul. Akash and Mira get divorced in the court and fearing that Akash might take her life in absence of Rahul, Mira is forced to give the custody of her only child to Akash, until he is at least 5 years old.

The movie tells the story of a middle aged Muslim woman Gazala (Shabana Azmi), who is ill treated by her husband and sent back to her parent's home, just because she is unable to give birth to a son. Gazala does have a daughter Salma (Rajeshwari Sachdev). The plot revolves around Gazala's stay at her mother's home and the problems faced by the women of the house, being her mother and sisters-in-law. The film is a beautiful description of the problems faced by women in the name of fertility, or in a different sense the urge to have a male child, especially in rural India. Shyam Benegal provides a masterpiece, reflecting on the sorrowful plight of rural Indian women. The irony lies in the point where the movie begins with a scene which shows a bull being brought to impregnate a buffalo. Five different women, each with a different story depicting the harsh realities of a woman's life.

A cruel and evil landowner Jaganath Singh (Dilip Kumar) is murdered and his twin brother Amarnath Singh (also Dilip Kumar) decides to investigate. He finds the list of suspects is endless. The prime suspects are Jaganath's son Amar (Mukul Dev), Jaganath's abused wife Suman (Smita Jaykar) and a woman named Yamini (Rekha) who claims she was raped by Jaganath. Eventually Jaganath's son Amar confesses to killing his father. He reveals that on the night of his father's death he accidentally shot him while trying to fight him off when Jagannath held Amar and his mother at gunpoint. Soon after the list of suspects grow after it is discovered that Jaganath's had many more enemies who could have killed him including landowner Mangal Singh (Gulshan Grover) and even Jaganath's own brother Amarnath who doesn't seem to have got on well with Jaganath himself in the past.

The film deals with the social stigma associated with a handicapped girl in a rural milieu. Murali is a potter by profession. He has a sister, who is born dumb. Murali has to struggle a lot as the handicraft industry is a dying industry and a good amount of money is taken away by his father (Manivannan), who is a drunkard and a gambler. But, he tries to hide his sorrows by having fun with his sister and servant (Vadivelu), who is also his trusted friend. He is in love with his neighbour (Meena), a weaver. He wants to get his sister married to a noble man. But many reject her as she is dumb. Finally, one man agrees to marry his sister but on condition that Murali must offer dowry. Murali then sells many things dearer to him to get money for the dowry. But, that money is taken away by his father and the marriage falls through. Yet Vadivelu offers to marry his sister without asking dowry and Murali goes home along with Vadivelu to convey this happy news to his sister. But it was too late as the sister commits suicide. Murali as a penance decides to marry a handicapped girl.

The police are called to investigate the death of a woman during a riot in the walled city of Delhi. She was killed by a stone thrown by an agitated mob. When a young reporter covering the funeral, Tehzeeb Abbasi (Rajina Raj Bisaria), discovers her father among the mourners, her curiosity prompts her to investigate further. Then comes the revelation that the singer was in fact her aunt, who was disowned by her family for rebelliously learning music from a concubine.
