The film explores how an aristocratic woman's life changes when her brother dies and her marriage breaks down. Lady Elizabeth Dewhurst (Suzanne von Borsody) believes her husband Gregor (Iain Glen) is at fault for the accidental death of her beloved brother Simon (William Mickleburgh). Their marriage has been rocky, but this is the last straw and she asks him to move out of the household. Elizabeth's best friend Mary Phillips {Rachel Fielding} has had her eye on Gregor for some time and sees this as her chance. She encourages them to use the services of a powerful but shady family attorney, Mr. Sharp (Jonathan Coy), and Sharp expects to benefit financially from the division of the Dewherst estate. Peter Rosen (Rutger Hauer) is visiting from a local University. Liz is drawn to him for a mild affair, even though he is the professor of her son Alex (Daniel Sharman).

The plot portrays the Swedish government as being responsible for using the ship to covertly transport Russian high-tech components to the United States. The story is uncovered by a young female journalist, not unlike Rabe herself. According to Rabe, divers hired by the Swedish government (signing contracts swearing lifetime secrecy) spent hours breaking into cabins frantically searching for a black attaché case carried by a Russian space technology dealer, Aleksandr Voronin (who died 2002). She highlighted US interest in various Soviet technology, including nuclear-powered satellites. She also suggested that panic about the stability of some form of nuclear device is the most likely reason behind the initial Swedish government suggestion of burying the wreck in concrete, a highly unusual proposal for a wreck, reminiscent of Chernobyl's sarcophagus.

Manni, le copain de Lola, doit remettre une grosse somme d'argent à un trafiquant de voitures. Lola, qui devait aller le chercher, s'est fait voler son scooter et n'a pu arriver à l'heure. Manni décide alors de prendre le métro pour ne pas arriver en retard. Mais il oublie par mégarde le sac en plastique dans lequel se trouvent les 100 000 DM en liquide qui lui avaient été confiés. Il ne lui reste plus que vingt minutes avant qu'on vienne lui réclamer l'argent. Désespéré, il téléphone à Lola qui a exactement vingt minutes pour le tirer de ce mauvais pas. Elle sort de chez elle en courant, dans l'idée d'aller voir son père, banquier, qui pourrait peut-être l'aider.

Isaak Kohler (Maximilian Schell) coolly walked up to a man everyone assumed was his friend and shot him dead. This took place in front of dozens of witnesses in a busy restaurant, and there was no question about his guilt. What he never revealed was his motive. He has been in prison serving a twenty-year sentence ever since. Perhaps in order to ease his daughter's pain about the incident, he has hired a legal representative to arrange for him to receive a retrial. He is still unforthcoming about his reasons for committing the crime, and invites the struggling lawyer to make something up. This crime and courtroom drama is based on a novel by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, whose works are highly respected within the German-speaking intellectual community but whose appeal has proved difficult to translate.
