Usmar Ismail (20 mars 1921 – 2 janvier 1971) est un réalisateur indonésien. Il est considéré comme un des pionniers du cinéma indonésien bien que les Hollandais ou les Français eussent tourné certains films dans ce pays dès 1926.

Biographie

Ismail sert dans l'armée sous l'occupation hollandaise, puis il écrit des scénarios de théâtre pour la compagnie dramatique Maya, active sous l'occupation japonaise. Il poursuit son rêve de devenir réalisateur en établissant le premier studio cinématographique d'Indonésie, Perfini Studios, au début des années cinquante. En 1952-1953 Ismail étudie le cinéma à l'Université de Los Angeles, obtenant un "BA". Peu après, se met en place une collaboration entre les studios Perfini et la compagnie Persari Film (fondée par Malik Djamaluddin) qui débouche sur la production d'une réalisation d'Ismail, Lewat Djam Malam (Après le couvre-feu) (1953), qui rencontre un succès dans la critique et les salles.

En 1958 Ismail connait un autre succès avec Asrama Dara (Le Dortoir des filles), le récit d'un étudiant en médecine devenu soldat de la révolution et qui, après la libération, fait face aux difficultés de la réintégration dans la vie civile et se sent trahi par une classe politique corrompue. Plusieurs films d'Ismail se situent ainsi dans le contexte des événements de l'époque, à savoir la décolonisation. À l'étranger, Ismail est d'ailleurs connu surtout pour son film en anglais Fighters for Freedom (Combattants de la liberté) (1961), qui traite de la lutte d'indépendance indonésienne contre les occupants hollandais et français.

Usmar Ismail est descendant de l'ethnie des Minangkabau. Une salle de concert a été créée en son nom à Jakarta et donne des spectacles de musique, d'opéra et de théâtre. Il a en outre révéler au grand public l'artiste indonésienne Suzzanna (mieux connu sous le nom de la Reine de l'horreur) en lui confiant ses premiers rôles dans les années 50.

Medasing (Bambang Hermanto) is the fierce leader of a group of robbers who joined them after his parents were killed. He and his gang track the movements of a rich merchant (Rd Ismail) and his family, who are returning from a successful business trip. While the family is sleeping in the woods, Medasing and his men sneak into the camp, where they kill most of the porters and merchant. Leaving the merchant's wife behind, Medasing takes the merchant's daughter Sayu (Nurbani Jusuf) with him. He brings her to their hideout, where she is held captive.

The village of Sukaslamet is scheduled to receive an honoured guest from afar. Midi, a villager, is sent to the city to escort him. Distracted and confused by the lively city, Midi comes across a salesman offering a "potent" hair-growing tonic, which – unknown to Midi – is actually ineffective. To speed the onset of the tonic's effects, Midi arranges for a car to take him and the salesman back to Sukaslamet. There, the salesman is welcomed as the honored guest, and he takes advantage of the warm welcome. However, his fun is cut short when the actual guest arrives in the village, and the salesman is driven out of the village.

The Siliwangi Division, originally headquartered in West Java, is temporarily based in Central Java owing to the Renville Agreement. After putting down a communist rebellion in Madiun, killing numerous members of the Communist Party of Indonesia in the process, they are on a break. The division's leader, Captain Sudarto, meets with an Indo woman named Connie, who is originally from Bandung. The two become friendly, but after a Dutch attack is launched on the capital at Yogyakarta, they must separate as the division heads westwards. Captain Sudarto leads his men – together with women and children – over more than 200 kilometres (120 mi), resting during the day and travelling in the morning and evening. They face hunger, a shortage of supplies, and Dutch air strikes. Along the way, Sudarto begins falling in love with a nurse named Widya.

Harsono (Raden Sukarno) takes the virginity of Suryani (Nila Djuwita) on his family's plantation, then leaves her to live in the city. Whilst Suryani marries Harsono's brother Sutopo (Raden Ismail), Harsono finds himself attracted to a city girl, a flirt named Sandra. When she wrongs him, Harsono strangles her to death. During an ensuing investigation it is shown that Sandra died of a heart attack and not as a direct result of being strangled, allowing Harsono to return to his village. He tries to marry Suryani, but she chooses to stay with her husband.
