Kappal (2014)

The story starts with Vasu (Vaibhav) narrating his story from childhood. He has four close friends (Karunakaran, Arjunan, Venkat Sundar, Karthik Priyadarshan) and they hero worship Seenu Anna (Robo Shankar) for his dedication to friendship and one day he advises to them that marriage will spoil friendship and all the friends take this seriously, except for Vasu, who always has a liking for girls, and he is forced to promise not to marry lifelong along with his friends. After failing many attempts of falling in love at school and college (his friends spread rumor that Vasu is gay), Vasu decides to leave to Chennai so that he would get an opportunity to love a girl. He stays with Nelson (VTV Ganesh) who has affair with many rich and beautiful girls and he persuades him to trap a rich girl citing that middle class and college girls will have bigger competition and high expectations but super rich girls have a very less expectations and many guys do not try to date them assuming its impossible to woo them. Also he hands over the pub membership card to Vasu so that he can get to see many rich girls. During a visit to pub, arrives Deepika (Sonam Bajwa) in Audi car but with a male friend who collapses due to over drinking. Vasu falls in love with her instantly and he helps her lift the friend and also accompanies her to the pub and befriends her. But next day when he visits her home she is unable to recall about him since she was drunk the previous night and rejects his love advances. After all the cop thrashing and goons threatening episode, Deepika falls in love with him. Meanwhile his friends come to know about his love affair and threaten him to break up with her. But when he acts like committing suicide they act as if they accept his love but secretly plan to irritate Deepika and break their love. Deepika gets annoyed by their behavior and soon they manage to create a rift between both and the duo get separated. Deepika gets depressed and decides to marry a family friend who keeps proposing her from the beginning. Also, Vasu is very depressed after the breakup, and soon his friends decide that the only way they can see their friend happy is to patch him up with his lady love, and they plot many master plans to stop the wedding, and finally the wedding is stopped. Deepika then gets married to Vasu and they lead a happy life. Vasu also keeps in touch with his friends forever.

15 years after an accident in which Bala's parents both died, Bala returns with wife, Revathi, and son, Anand, to his hometown. They decide to stay a couple of nights in the massive house that he grew up in. As he spends a few days in the house and recalls his memories, Anand- who has a disability to speak- sees movement around the house. But he cannot tell anyone what he witnesses. Soon Revathi who suffers from claustrophobia, deduces poltergeist activity in the house and so tells Bala that they have to go back to Chennai. Anand enjoys being in the presence of the ghosts and doesn't find any problem. Problems come up between the couple that they had never thought of when they had love marriage. Soon Revathi discovers that they did not come on holiday but in fact, came to escape some rowdies that Bala owes money to. This is when Bala's classmate and business partner, Jeeva, arrives to stay with them. His company had borrowed 40 lakhs from a rowdy and over the months it had increased to 50 lakhs but he is unable to pay back any money as his agent, who was supposed to give him 2 crores, runs away and is nowhere to be found. With the help of ghosts, Bala and his family find a way to escape from being kept under house arrest. Bala's partner who has been jealous of him had the money the whole time to pay the rowdies.

The plot opens with water over flowing from a flat in 'E-block' which is seen by the apartment watchman. When he goes to the flat to stop water he witnesses a young woman Ramya (Sindhu Menon), who had drowned in the water. Eventually the investigation of the death is taking place which is done by an officer Vasudevan (Aadhi), who also happens to be the ex-flame of Ramya. Though circumstantial evidence claims it as a suicide, Vasu doubts it is a suicide and starts to investigate it in another angle.

The film begins with group of students clearing weeds near a roadside tree. The scene flashes back a few years earlier in a bus with a lot of college students heading towards Government Arts College in a small town. A set — Muthuchelvan, Kayalvizhi, Adhilakshmi, Nagarani, Albert, Kaamatchinathan, Salima, Iyanar — are introduced as friends since high school. There is a small build up to the introduction of the hero (Muthu played by newcomer Akil), who is part and parcel of the circle. All are studying in the same class. In the South Indian kingdom of Cholapuram Paalayam in the year 1771, Raja Mokkaiyappar and his queen, Rajamatha Bhavani Ammaiyar are desperate for a child, as all their previous twenty-two children have died at birth. Unknown to them, Bhavani's brother, Sangilimayan, who is also the Rajaguru (Chief Minister), is responsible for the death of their children. Sangilimayan is shocked to see that his sister has given birth to twins. Before informing the king about the birth, he calls the palace astrologer, Chinnavadayaan, who predicts that the elder twin will be incapable of making decisions on his own while the younger one will be smarter. Sangilimayan orders the palace doctor, Kailasakaruppan, to kill the younger one, but Chinnavadayaan tells Sangilimayan that his actions would not be good for the kingdom. Instead, Sangilimayan orders the palace doctor to abandon the child in a nearby river. The elder child is named Pulikecei XXIII. Maragathavalli, Kailasakaruppan's childless wife, rescues the abandoned child from the river, and the couple decides to raise him as their own, naming him Ukraputhan.

Devar madom Narayanan (Mammootty) is accused of killing his father, for being cruel to his mother, at the age of 13 and serves a sentence in a juvenile home. When he returns, he becomes leader of the people of Perumalpuram village. He ensures the village is devoid of all wrong doers by expelling them from the village. His enemies are his uncle Kunjambu Nair (Nedumudi Venu) and wife Indrani (Seema). Kunjambu Nair hated Narayanan killing his brother, although Kunjambu Nair and his son Giri (Siddique) tried in many ways to kill Narayanan. At one point Giri almost succeeded in killing Devar madom Narayanan. But Narayanan again didn’t react. He was on good terms with Kunjambu Nair’s daughter (Sandhya) and his Murapennu (Aditi Rao). Giri tries to sell his land in Perumalpuram to some outsider whose arrival, Narayanan knew, would destroy the harmony of the village. That is when Narayanan decides to react.
