This brought back after a couple of years the old successful comedy combo of Mohanlal and Sreenivasan, which was popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This film is the fourth record grosser film from Priyadarshan-Mohanlal team, after Thalavattam (1986), Chithram (1988), and Kilukkam (1991). The name "Chandralekha" is a combination of the names of the two heroines in the story, 'Chandra' and 'Lekha'.
Synopsis
Appukuttan Nair or 'Appu' (Mohanlal) is a struggling unemployed youth who arrives in Mumbai to meet his sister and brother-in-law (Augustine). His father has been falsely implicated in a bank fraud and wants to sell his ancestral property to pay towards the litigation. For that he needs his sister's approval, but is abused and turned away by his brother-in-law. Disappointed, Appu seeks out his old pal Nooruddin or 'Noor' (Sreenivasan), who is working in a fruit juice vending shop in Mumbai. Noor himself is a hapless uneducated youth working for his uncle Beeran (Mamukkoya), who is a treacherous money lender, with a hope to marry his daughter Maimoona. They plan to open a paint shop but need 1.25 lakh Rupees to rent a shop as prerequisite to get a bank loan. With no other way in sight, they swindle Beeran out of 1.25 lakh Rupees. Appukuttan then tries to get the loan sanctioned but he is rebuffed by a new Bank manager Varghese (Maniyanpilla Raju) who had taken charge by then.Acteurs

Mukundan K. Kartha (Mohanlal) is a simple man, with a decent job, whose old college classmate and friend Viswanath (Sreenivasan) comes to meet him. He lives in a small residential colony in Chennai, where there's a water shortage and the people struggle to make ends meet. The damsel of the colony, Sumithra (Ranjini) likes Mukundan. Viswanath is a fraud and con-man and he makes Mukundan and the people of his colony believe that he is an influential person and classmate of the Public Works Department minister. Story revolves around two friends Narayanan Kutty (Mohanlal) and Balan (Shankar Panicker). Working as a mechanic at K&K Automobiles in Chennai, Narayanan Kutty is always lusty towards girls. Though he has never been successful in wooing any girl, Narayan Kutty finds fun in boasting about his encounters with rich girls in and around the city. Manoharan (Jagathy Sreekumar), the proprietor of K&K Automobiles always falls in deep trouble because of the careless attitude of Narayan Kutty at work place. Balan a close buddy of Mala imposters himself as Mala and contacts Narayanan Kutty. Kutty, who has never seen Mala, starts believing Balan to be original Mala. But as part of a plan to fool him, Mala approaches him as Sujatha, a news reporter to interview him about his relationship with the daughter of M.N Nambiar. In short time, Narayanan Kutty falls in love with Mala, whom he mistakes to be Sujatha (Lizy Priyadarshan). Things get much complicated for him as she also reciprocates in the same manner. On the other hand, the life of Balan was going too smoothly until the parents of his fiancée arrives in the city along with her to see his office. Balan, who is actually an attender at the office had lied to them that he is a manager of the company. To add more trouble, M.N Nambiar decides to marry again, which his daughter objects vehemently, inviting more clashes. How Balan and Narayanan Kutty solve out the troubles and loose the knots that they created, forms the rest of the story.

Revathi (Menaka) comes to the city from a small town in search of a job and to have a good life and as it is with everyone her problem starts with finding a house. Shyam (Shankar) wants to become a singer. His parents are against his wish to become a singer. So he runs away from home and needs a shelter. Revathi accidentally meets Shyam, who too is in search of a house through the common milk-boy, Chikku (Baiju). Chikku offers them both a house to rent if they are ready to pose as husband and wife in front of the landlord.

The story revolves around Manikyan (Mohanlal), Sreekrishnan(Nedumudi Venu) and Karthumbi (Shobana) and the love triangle between them. Manikyan works for Sreekrishnan and Sreekrishnan sees him like a brother. Once when they both are returning from a Mela after shopping, Sreekrishnan sees Karthumbi and gets attracted. Sivaraman (Mohanlal), an unemployed man, comes to Mumbai to find a job. Unfortunately he loses all his certificates but happens to find Govindan Kutty (Mukesh), who also is a jobless man (from Sivaraman's native place) wandering in Mumbai. They try to get visa from a travel agency but finds no way to gather such massive amount. Govindan Kutty persuades Sivaraman to participate in a bank robbery planned by Thomas (Cochin Haneefa) and his gang - his stammering brother Tyootty (Jagadish) and Alina (who pretends to be Thomas' lover) - which puts them in more trouble as the robbery ends in vain when they hit Pothuval (Innocent). Alina secretly informs the police about the robbery and tells that the entire plan was carried out by Thomas. Thomas, before getting arrested, hides the money, and the place is kept secret except to his lawyer, Nambeeshan (Jagathy Sreekumar). Alina fakes to be in love with Nambeeshan to find the place where the money is hidden.
