Synopsis

A group of boys stalks and harasses their neighbor Dr. Ramachandran and his wife, Sharada, who made complaints against them a few times. Sharada was raped and murdered by them after keeping Dr. Ramachandran as hostage. They also raped his sister, and she falls into mental illness. Ramachandran seeks vengeance and becomes a vigilante against his wife's killers.

The film tells the story Unniyarcha, the valiant heroine of the Vadakkanpattu, though a member of the fairer sex, masters martial arts and proves herself as an equal to her brother Aromal Chekavar and cousin Chandu Chekavar, both renowned warriors. Bharathan (Mammootty) and his friends (Mala Aravindan, Siddique and Bobby Kottarakkara) earn money by gambling in the streets. But Bharathan is forced to close down his business when a carnival is organised in the village. Bharathan manages to get a job in the carnival company and soon becomes the most trusted person of its owner Chandrappan, who is fondly called as Bhai. James, another worker at the company is envious about the growth of Bharathan. He attempts to kill Bharathan by removing the brakes of Bharathan's circus bike. Unfortunately, Bhai is killed in that accident. Bharathan, who once happened to witness James intimately engaging with Bhai's wife, is doubtful about James's involvement in the murder. Meanwhile, James, with the help of a police officer, casts Bharathan for the murder. In the climax, Bharathan proves his innocence and brings James in front of justice. On the parallel, a romance story between Bharathan and Gowri is shown. Gowri is a girl who had to sell herself to earn bread for her family.

Dr. Baladevi (Seema) is a gynecologist. She lost her parents at a young age and is deeply attached to her only brother Thilakan (Shankar). Thilakan gets an opportunity to pursue his study in U. S. As he was about to depart, he tells Baladevi about his girlfriend Subhashini and wanted Baladevi to take care of her. The twist comes when Subhashini informs Baladevi that she was raped by a man and is pregnant. She wants Baladevi to abort her child. However, she dies during the MTP surgery and Baladevi gets into an allegation and legal case related to that death. A case is filed by Subhashini's cousin Ramu (Mohanlal), who also tries to blackmail Baladevi for money. Baladevi is helped by Adv. Jayamohan (Mammootty), who has a weakness for ladies. The verdict came in favour of Baladevi, who eventually falls for Jayamohan, whose lifestyle changes after involving in relation with her. Meanwhile, Jayamohan also reveals that Subhashini has had relations with many men including him, and Ramu was a pimp than a cousin for her.The story is based on the novel by P.R Shyamala,published in 1984.
