The film received positive reviews and became a hit at the box office and become a cult film.A young man goes to the city looking for a job suitable for his education, but in due course of time he becomes a criminal as that fetches him more money than any other mode of employment.
Synopsis
Ranga (Rajinikanth) alias Ranganathan who lost his sister Laksmi (K . R .Vijaya) in childhood,comes to the city searching for work suitable for his graduation.He meet Raju (Karate Mani) who is a thief . Ranga advise Raju to give up his crime and be a good man . Raju accept his advise and changes, but Ranga who have changed Raju becomes a hitman because he feel its better way to survive . Laksmi, now married a wealthy man and had a child called Suresh (Master Suresh) . Raju who had changes came across Suresh and saved him from a local thugs.Laksmi, decided to keep Raju as a guardian for Suresh to keep him away from danger. Ranga has taken a contract from Ganga (Radhika) to collect money from the local thugs leader Ravi (Ravindran) . However Ravi invites Ranga to join his gang but Ranga declines stating that he does not work for any gang, but is ready to do anything given enough money . Ranga's first assignment with Ravi is to kidnapped Suresh so they can threatened his parent for money . Ranga has kidnap Suresh but saved by Raju . Raju does not know that is Ranga who came to kidnap Suresh as Ranga was in disguise . Ranga realise it was Raju and he came and meet upon Raju . Raju's joyness was no bound as he meet Ranga and tells him that he work as a guardian for Suresh.Raju also introduce Laksmi to Ranga . Unknowing that Ranga was her brother and a hitman, she agreed to keep Ranga as another guardian for Suresh . Ranga reveals his true nature to Raju that he is one who attempt to kidnap Suresh. Raju advise Ranga to give his crime and be loyal to Laksmi . Ranga however determine to kidnap Suresh and also challenges Raju, that he will chase him out and finish his task, which he does . But, Ravi was a brother of Laksmi's husband played a double cross game to Ranga and reveals him that Laksmi is his sister. But then Ranga was caught by Ravi's thugs but Raju came to the rescue and saved Ranga . Ravi was dashed in jail, Ranga with his lover Ganga, sister and Raju lead a happy life .Acteurs

Satyamoorthy is a wealthy diamond business man and a widower living with his younger brother Raja (Rajinikanth) and two daughters Radha and Chitra. Satyamoorthy is a great devotee of saints and priests trusting all of them to be genuine whereas Raja is a happy go lucky guy just opposite to his brother who does not trust any of them. Satyamoorthy once invites a priest to his home to perform rituals to drive away all evil surrounding his house not knowing that the priest is a fake and member of a robber gang. Satyamoorthy takes him to his treasury room where he had stored his huge wealth and tells him the secret of unlocking his lockers. The fake priest pretends to give a sacred sheet and instructs to place it inside the locker which shall protect the stuffs. As Raja suspected, the priest sends the robbers at night to loot the wealth but Raja wakes up and fights with them and restores the looted property. Raja's repeated attempts to prove that the priest is fake goes vain as Satyamoorthy believes strongly that Raja protected the wealth only because of the divine power of the sacred sheet.

Rajasekaran (Major Sundarrajan) is a rich man who is in possession of an antique sword that holds the key to a treasure. Nagalingam (Thengai Srinivasan), a criminal, makes several unsuccessful attempts to steal the sword from Rajasekaran. On one such attempts Anand (Jaishankar) saves Rajasekaran and becomes his trusted guy to protect the sword. Raju(Rajnikanth), an orphan who is being raised by an alcoholic, ex-thief Rajasingam (M.N Nambiar), is an expert in boosting cars and Anita (##Anita Raj) is his love interest. Several years back Rajasingam had stolen a car owned by Nagalingam with a child inside without knowing that the car and the child (Raju) actually belonged to Rajasekaran. One day Rajasingam spots Nagalingam in a shopping complex and believing that Raju is the son of Nagalingam, he hands Raju to him as his own son. Nagalingam deceitfully accepts Raju as his son and cleverly employs him to steal the sword from Rajasekaran, his real father. While Raju attempts to steal the sword, Anand keeps thwarting him. Despite Anand's efforts Raju manages to loot the sword but then discovers that he's actually the son of Rajasekaran and he himself had been instrumental in stealing his own family treasure for the wrong men. With the help of Anand, Raju fights with Nagalingam's gang to successfully retrieve their family treasure and reunites with his family.
