Selva starring Kamal Hassan, Trisha, Prakash Raj, Kishore and Asha Sarath. The film, which was simultaneously shot in Telugu as Cheekati Rajyam with the same cast, was jointly produced by Raaj Kamal Films International and Sri Gokulam Movies. The film is an adaptation of the 2011 French film Sleepless Night (French: Nuit Blanche).

Rani (Bidushi Dash Barde), the daughter of former Chennai police officer Arokiya Raj (Prakash Raj), tells her father over the phone that she will back home in 20 minutes. As she leaves the telephone booth, she is approached by someone. The screen then cuts to black and we find out that Rani does not come home. The following morning Arokiya Raj finds a finger hanging at his door. Police reports confirm that it is his daughter Rani's finger. He calls Raghavan (Kamal Hassan), his old friend, for investigation. Raghavan handles the case and they eventually find the body of Rani in a forest in the city outskirts. The doctor's report states that the killer bisected Rani’s body with a surgical knife, proving that the murderer has a strong medical background. Following the trauma of losing their only daughter, Arokiya Raj and his wife move to New York.

Nanda Gopal a.k.a. Nandu (Mahesh Babu) is a professional assassin, and Malli (Sonu Sood) is his partner. State level opposition party leader Shiva Reddy (Sayaji Shinde) wants someone to attempt an assassination on him so that he can gain sympathy votes in the upcoming elections and become the new Chief Minister after promoting his party in such conditions. His colleague Baji Reddy (Kota Srinivasa Rao) with the help of Farooq (Posani Krishna Murali) hooks him up with Nandu for a deal for ₹1.5 crores. After receiving the payment, Nandu and Malli plan the fake assassination attempt at the promotion campaign held nearby and they choose a nearby building to hide and a car to escape. However, before Nandu can shoot Shiva Reddy, someone else fatally shoots him. Within minutes, police surround the building. Just before the exit of the building, a big car accident occurs on the street with Nandu's car. Nandu assumes that Malli got trapped and died in the accident. So Nandu goes to the top of the skyscraper. With the police behind him and in front of him, he is helpless. Suddenly a train comes and Nandu uses a rope to jump from the skyscraper to the train. On the train, Nandu meets Pardhasaradhi a.k.a. Pardhu (Rajiv Kanakala) and travels with him.

Venkatadri (Venkatesh) is a tough bodyguard who is assigned to protect the family of Varadarajula Naidu (Prakash Raj). Keerthi (Trisha Krishnan) is the college going daughter of Naidu and Venkatadri accompanies her to the college to keep a watch. Fed up with the close scrutiny maintained by Venkatadri, Keerthi hatches a plan with her friend Swathi (Saloni Aswani) to divert Venkatadri’s attention. Keerthi tries to distance herself from Venkatedri by calling him from a private number, Venkatadri falls in love with the girl without knowing that it is Keerthi herself. At one point, Keerthi too feels herself becoming attracted to Venkatadri and expresses her desire to meet him in person. However due to circumstances they are not able to accomplish this until at the climax when she tells Venkatadri to meet at a railway station and elope with her. The film opens in a hospital at Mumbai, where Bose (Nandamuri Balakrishna) coming back to life after staying in a coma for eighteen months. As soon as he recovers, Bose is identified as Godse by everyone around him and he is surprised when an elderly couple, (Chandra Mohan & Jaya Sudha), claim to be his parents. Bose keeps convincing all of them that he is not Godse and has his own story. Suddenly a girl Sarayu (Radhika Apte) arrives as Godse's wife a tries him to remember their marriage life, which makes a lot of confusion. Later Godse finds out that it was all a ruse set up by the Bharadwaja (Prakash Raj) and his real name is Bose. The rest of this movie deals with why the CM wanted Bose alive and why did he set up him with a new identity? Bose, a sincere and powerful CBI Officer on a mission to crack the suspicious death of former Chief Minister of State Achyuta Ramayya (Vijay Kumar). Bose learns that influential person, sitting CM Bharadwaj is behind the death of former CM and tries to prove him of guilty. Which forms the rest are the obstacles created by Bharadwaj and how Bose overcome them.

The film was loosely based on the Ramayana. Venkat (Prabhas) and Sailaja (Trisha) are youngsters who first meet on a train during a rain shower. Venkat keeps bumping into Sailaja coincidentally every time it rains. This makes them both feel that it is perhaps the rain that keeps bringing them together, and they start to fall in love. Venkat is mesmerized by Sailaja's beauty, charisma, and childlike behavior. Sailaja, also, is impressed by Venkat. Due to unfortunate circumstances the two are drawn apart. At the same time that the two meet, Sailaja catches the eye of antagonist Bhadranna (Gopichand) who also becomes infatuated with Sailaja. Venkat and Sailaja meet in Warangal again and believe that they are meant for each other because it rains every time they meet. Ranga Rao (Prakash Raj), Sailaja's dad, is a typical black sheep with all kinds of bad habits. In the process, he is ready to marry off his daughter to Bhadranna for money. Ranga Rao plants certain ego problems in the minds of Venkat and Sailaja in order to break them up. This causes Venkat to leave Warangal for Vizag. And Sailaja prepares to become an actress (her father convinces her). Later on, Bhadranna kidnaps Sailaja. The rest of the story is about how Venkat rescues Sailaja from the bastion of Bhadranna and how he clears up the misunderstanding with Sailaja in the process.
