Vedi tells the story of Prabhakaran (Vishal), who is a young Police Officer, who goes to Kolkata in search of his sister, Aishwarya (Poonam Kaur). Prabhakaran, at his native place, Thoothukudi, had developed enmity with a local don (Sayaji Shinde) by thrashing him in public and putting him behind bars. The enmity gets travelled to Kolkata also where the don join another local gangster to take revenge on the police officer. The baddies trouble the police officer's sister and her friend, Paaru (Sameera Reddy), who falls in love with Prabhakaran.

Anwar (Anand Michael) is a final year medical student in Bangalore and Sajna (Meera Jasmine) studies in a local professional college. They are cousins and their marriage had been fixed in childhood. An ancient painting of Chandramukhi, alias Nagavalli (Anushka Shetty), floats away to a distant place, where it finally comes into the hands of a village painter. The painter takes it home to restore it. When his wife asks him to sell the painting, he becomes furious, saying that he wouldn't sell it off even at the cost of his life. The next day, the painter is shown to be dead under mysterious circumstances, possibly being a suicide. The painting is then sold off to a dance competition, which was distributed as a prize to Bharatanatyam dancer Gayathri (Kamalinee Mukherjee), her husband and her family. Shakthivel (Bharath) is the son of a wealthy industrialist and the managing director of Rajasekar Industries. His mother Kamala is suing the company because Shakthi insulted her for having an affair with the company auditor. To add to that, the girl he loved got married to someone else. Disgusted with life, he gets up and walks aimlessly, taking a bus to the Chennai Railway Station. There he boards the Pandian Express at night without a ticket and sits in gloom. Seeing him sitting on the platform, she gets off the train to bring him back. As a result she misses the train. She tells Shakthi that it is his responsibility to take her back to the train. Annoyed, he takes her to the next station so that she can board the train and leaves her. Anjali again misses the train. While she is waiting for a taxi to reach the next station, some gangsters chase her, but she runs into Shakthi who fights them off.
