Synopsis
A nobody, comic Kip Cooper does his act on stage in Asbury Park, New Jersey to more snores than roars. He asks out one of the performing Washburn sisters for a date, and finds that Fay's parents once did a vaudeville act that Kip still knows by heart.Acteurs

Air Force flyers Rick Williams (Ron Hagerthy) and Mike Nolan (Dick Wesson) attempt to meet Nell Wayne (Janice Rule), a (fictitious) film star performing in a star-studded musical in San Francisco. Rick and Nell were both from the same small town, but had never met. Mike attempts to convince both the staff and cast members at the theater that Rick and Nell are best friends and are extremely close. Ruth Roman takes pity on them and takes them to meet Nell. However, the men first meet with Doris Day and Gordon MacRae, who are rehearsing the song "You're Gonna Lose Your Gal."

Nick Cherney, en prison pour avoir détourné du fret de la compagnie Torno, veut se venger de son patron Johnny, responsable de son incarcération. Lorsqu'il visionne un film annonçant le retour triomphal du capitaine Jess Torno, le frère de Johnny, Nick saisit sa chance. Il charge un camarade, devant sortir une semaine avant lui, d'assassiner Jess contre de l'argent. Ce dernier exécute le contrat et Johnny arrive chez son frère juste avant qu'il ne meure. Jess, qui est prêtre, a le temps de dire à son frère qu'il a écrit un indice dans sa bible. Mais Johnny ne trouve aucune trace de la bible chez Jess et décide de tout faire pour la retrouver. De son côté, Nick tente de se rapprocher de Johnny avec la ferme intention de compléter sa vengeance. Il commence à paniquer lorsque Torno remonte la piste de l'assassin de Jess.

Amid vignettes involving a philandering husband who fakes amnesia, a child prodigy who yearns to live a normal life, an aging bachelor whose housekeeper has disappeared, and an old lady whose daughter has run away, the primary plot line focuses on brash detective Butch Saunders, who is assigned to find missing Chicago banker Therme Roberts. Butch finds himself attracted to the man's wife Norma, despite the fact they're both married, so when his superior, Captain Webb, tells him she really is Norma Phillips and the man she claims is missing is not her husband but the person she has been accused of murdering, he doesn't believe her. Norma fakes her suicide by drowning and disappears, but can't resist returning when Butch stages her funeral in the hope she'll surface. Not only she but the missing Roberts, as well, turn up at the services. Norma tells Butch she once was Roberts' secretary, and he killed his mentally disturbed twin brother and assumed his identity in order to avoid embezzlement charges. Roberts denies her accusations, but Webb tricks him into admitting his guilt. Norma is cleared and, when Butch learns his wife Belle never divorced her first husband, the two are free to wed.
