Rajalingam (alias Raju) (Sivaji Ganesan) is the son of a wealthy Madurai-based industrialist, Sankaralingam (S. V. Ramadoss). Living with Raju is his driver and friend, Sundaram (Major Sundarrajan). While vacationing in his family estate at Kodaikanal with Sundaram and his family doctor, Gopal (S. A. Asokan), Raju meets Parvathi (Vanisri) and falls in love with her. Gopal too becomes smitten with Parvathi when he meets her whilst conducting her father's (Poornam Vishwanathan) medical treatment. Parvathi, who knows Raju through her father, as he is also an accountant of Raju's family estate, reciprocates Raju's feelings. Gopal decides not to reveal his love for Parvathi to Raju for Raju's sake. Raju and Parvathi marry in secret with the help of Gopal and the consent of Parvathi's father. Prabhu, hailing from an orthodox Brahmin community gets a job with Calcutta Constructions as supervisor. Calcutta Company has been in efforts to restructure their land by vacating an illegal colony lying adjacent to its premises. Popularly known as Vietnam Colony, it is inhabited by mainly daily labourers. The company has been in efforts to demolish the colony for long time, but failed to do so. The colony is now under the rule a few hardcore criminals to whom the residents have to pay specific amount every week. Now, Prabhu is appointed by company to evacuate the colony, by dealing with these criminals. He is assisted by Goundamani. Both arrive in the colony under the disguise of professional writers who are planning to write a story on the life of colony residents. Upon arrival, both enter the house of Manorama in search of a house, but she mistakes them to have come to see her daughter Vineetha and calls Unni to bring tea and snacks. But after knowing about the goof happened, she lets them stay on the top floor of her house. Upon the advice of the House broker, Manorama believes that with time, her daughter might fall in love with Prabhu and might get married to this educated Brahmin guy. In the coming days, Prabhu befriends with various members of the colony and tries to read out their idea about vacating the colony. But he realizes that it is not an easy task to evacuate the people and thinks about different plans to be operated. From Manorama, Prabhu comes to know that the entire colony was owned by Nassar, a millionaire, who even gave up his mom for money. What happens next is rest of story. Réalisé par A. C. Sivaji Ganesan portrays three roles: an insecure father, a timid son and an angst-ridden twin brother. Sivaji Ganesan, a lawyer with a scarred face, gets married to Pandari Bai. The couple lead a happy life and Pandari Bai gives birth to twin brothers, a son with a scarred face (Also Ganesan) like his father and a brother (Also Ganesan). Their father unable to tolerate his eldest son's face leaves him under the custody of another person and tells his wife that the first child is dead. As years pass by, the father becomes a justice and his younger son, a happy-go-lucky college-going timid son, falls in love with Jayalalithaa. In the meanwhile, the elder son comes to know about his family and tries to meet his mother and brother but he is asked by his father not to reveal his identity to them. M. N. Nambiar, a man once punished by the father, kidnaps the younger son in order to take revenge on him. In the end, the elder son rescues his brother, killing M. N. Nambiar. He succumbs to his injuries and dies on the lap of his mother (Pandari Bai). This film was the first Tamil film recommended for an Oscar.
